  1. Thank you very much for pointing this out too. The more who do this, the less we have to keep blaming ourselves or being called out for being whiners or getting old.
I already called it 10 years ago. There will be put more and more in the "looks" of the game, at the far cost of the fun and quality.
And ofcourse beneficial microtransactions and lootboxes. I am so glad I am from the Netherlands at this point, because Belgium and us took the mature step to get rid of it.

  2. I think it depends on the genre. For shooters, AAA gaming is awful now a days but indie gaming is the best it ever has been. I actually mentioned this in my conclusion of a metroid prime remastered video I'm working on. I consider myself lucky that I grew up able to see gaming evolve in the 2000's.

  3. Pixel art is indeed timeless. The same goes with the stylized 3d art. Take Prince of Persia 2008, which is stylized 3d and aged better than Prince of Persia 5 which came out later. Also, for indie games as well, they tend to be better than AAA because they rely on pixel art or stylized 3d art while AAA games tend to focus on realistic graphics that are proved to age badly. This and also the AAA games are soulless cash grabs.

  4. Glad to see someone finally criticizing AAA games in general. They are out of touch, & the devs below might not be to blame, but we know what the overhead is passionate about, & it's usually not games.

As a side note, the recent Hogwarts Legacy is awesome. It has a few bugs to iron out, but it's great fun & an absolutely beautifully designed world. It's very inspirational for me.

  5. I miss cheat codes. I miss unlocking cosmetics. I miss being able to 100% a game.

Now, always online services make cheats impossible, cosmetics need to be sold, and games release with missing content to be sold back to us after a year.

  6. I tried to play Coromon yesterday, and it hit me with an advertisement to buy a coromon shirt in the next five days to unlock a swurmy outfit for my character. In a single player game.

I'd like to go 5 seconds without FOMO bullshit.

  7. In my experience the people who want to claim "nostalgia" on older games are the same people who would've made fun of you for playing video games back in the day.

  8. its funny, as an indie game dev I see this "dark age" as an opportunity. I feel we will get an artistic renaissance because of these AI generated AAA games starved of creativity. of course people will consume these games similar to eating McDonald's but Indie game devs will create innovative gourmet burgers 😉

  9. Gaming is great, all you have to do is filter out most triple A games since they are soulless copy paste cashgrabs.
Indies is where the true quality can be found nowadays.
Finding good indies can be hard though, because with that independence and inexpirience there is an even larger percentage of trash than with the AAA titles.

Good luck gamers, and don't give up!

Let me recommend some stuff outside of just monster taming, because Ed already has that genre covered:

    Metroidvania:
    – Bloodstained Ritual Of The Night (Original castlevania dev is involved + one of the best videogame OST ever made)
    – Blasphemous (Has a cult following of fans that like metroidvania with dark souls elements and difficulty + godly pixel art)

    Side scrolling action chaos:
    – Broforce (Many references to classic action hero movies, great pixel art, coop possible)
    – Huntdown (Classic eighties vibe)
    – My friend pedro (slow motion matrix action + smooth controls + intoxication banana)
    – Katana zero (godly pixel art + interesting story + smooth action)

RPG rythm/music game that reminds everyone of Undertale:
    – Everhood (good music + interesting gameplay + challenging + charming)

    Strategy:
    – Hero's hour (Heroes of might and magic as an autobattler + nice pixel art + great replayability)
    – Wargroove (amazing pixel art + medieval fantasy version of advance wars + charming)
    – Circle empires (can be played in short or long sessions + it just works + it has a sequel with multiplayer – multiplayer of the sequel can get laggy)

    Top down action:
    – Streets of rogue (roguelike that plays more like a tabletop rpg + great pixel art + great humour + deep and infinitely replayable + amazing for coop)
    – Hot brass (tactical SWAT shooting action + difficult but rewarding + coop possible)

    Zombies:
    – Infectonator 3 (Amazing pixel art + you are spreading the zombies to destroy humanity + charming with references + nostalgic)
    – Undead horde (you are the necromancer + medieval setting)

    Old school GTA revival:
    – Rustler (medieval parody setting + references and jokes – can be a bit buggy)
    – american fugitive (modern setting + more typical gta story – can be buggy + can be buggy in the funny way)

    Simply wholesome action rpg:
    – Cat quest (cute and charming + puntastic + casual + has a sequel with 2 player coop)

There are so many more fantastic games! Leave some suggestions in the replies 😉

  10. Indie gaming is pretty great. AAA gaming sucks, and new generations of consoles are being pumped out before the tech has advanced enough to merit a new gen. It's all about the finance bros and quarterly profits.

  11. Honestly gaming is getting very slow and boring many AAA titles lack compared to many indy games and smaller studios also personaly i would say that all these big devs are getting lazy and just make lack luster games. Not all devs are bad some devs get forced to put up games faster so all the companies can make there money worth without actualy caring for the game studios previous games and there brand image in the gaming world.A good example of this consist of Cyberpunk 2077,Assasins creed unity and fallout 76.All of these games where rushed and ended up horrible and affected the studios brand image and the image of the franchise/past franchises of the game.Ignoring the bugs the games where good but the bugs on launch due to a rushed launch and lack of development at that time cause these games to flop.

  12. I know I've said this a million times before, but storytelling and character design in modern AAA games is another huge problem for me. Like, I'll use RPGs for example. Why do I have a fonder memory of Shining Force or Breath of Fire than I do Fire Emblem or Final Fantasy? The story/roster. Seeing all these cool races and creatures come together and fight evil is something you don't see much even in indie titles. Instead, humans are portrayed as the ONLY good and valuable creature and goodguy "races" are required to inexplicably look exactly like humans. I have been BEGGING for a really good RPG with all these cool, diverse alien races coming together to fight a greater threat against the universe, and it just doesn't exist. Instead, we get stuff like Xenoblade Chronicals or Phantasy Star or Star Ocean, where all the good "aliens" are just humans with minor alterations, and this breaks my immersion every time. It's the same crap when it comes to fantasy RPGs. All the playable "races" are just humans, but slightly different. And, I swear, it gets tiring hearing the same excuses. "But they look human because it's REE-LAY-TUH-BUL!" The same people who make claims like this ALSO claim that "looks are superficial" which is a literal contradiction to that argument, especially since a creature's lifestyle and abilities would realistically contribute to how it looks to the point where there is ABSOLUTELY ZERO reason that the creature should look virtually identical to humans, but they're shorter or have pointy ears or whatever.

That, as well as stuff like "Nature is evil! Only humans and human look-a-likes are good!" While this plagues indie gaming, too, it is especially apparent in Triple A gaming. Even Nintendo's been leaning this way, lately.

  13. People need to relearn not to pre-order, buying "early access" games, or giving up a $100 for a new character or skin basically people need to have standards again and stop justify your purchase if you need to justify your purchase its was a bad purchase just take the L

  14. Aaaah bullshiters. AAA today and AAA from our youth are different kind of games. AAA from our youth games are more like today indie games. Gaming is still great if you buy other games than from main steam shop page or any nintendo title. Ok, Pokemon is wasted but this is an issue not with gaming but with great franchises.
Only issue is content restricted to users who buy game early. With that we cannot miss the bugs still having 100% content.

  15. This is not a problem with just the game industry, this is a problem with industries in general. The fantasy of evergrowing profit needs the sacrifice of something, and quality is constantly being that sacrifice. There's no solution on the current economic system for its own problems, we should look outside of it…

For example, TPC don't see a fucking dime of me in more than 10 years, but ironically (or not) its profits are high like no time. This makes me think that individual action is not enough, and wait for the companies to give up money for quality is an illusion.

  16. Too many random tangents tbh, so I disliked this video.
I’m gonna be honest…There’s bad games, mid games, and good games every era. That hasn’t changed. What has changed is the monetization and technology.

  17. Video games has changed so much and so are the mentality of them. I just wish the new games are like the Golden Age of Gaming (1990s-2010s), where you get a fully completed game at a reasonable price with no to little DLC.

  18. The points mentioned in this video is defiantly something I agree with. I miss the days when you buy a game without worrying if it’s going to work probably day 1 or not and don’t get me started on the monetization mechanics in fully priced games

  19. Tbf, nostalgia definitely plays a part, but in the grand scheme of things its a relatively small impact. We are seeing a lot more soulless corporate stuff in video games as time goes on, which is just sad. And with the whole mobile game thing, there are good free-to-play games, but they're a dime a dozen (And are usually indies).
The silver lining here tho is that the indie scene has never been better, both for devs and players, so that's nice at least.

  20. I think that dlc for pokemon are way better then third version that was the way since the beginnig, why buy a whole new vame when you can buy only the added content?
A lot of games may be s#ck, and based on in game perchus or dlc, but games like breath of the wild, xenoblade, final fantasy, digumin survive, legend arceus, are really good,

  21. Before the age of more modern games, you had to have actual quality in your games. You had to ride or die on making rich worlds, lovable characters, fun game play loops, music etc.
Now its more like swimming in shovel ware to find the gems.
And now there expecting us to pay $70 for new games. Like come on gaming devs your games are not worth even $60 dollars.
Not to mention also in this new age you Don't Own the games you have bought. Your renting them from places like steam, Xbox live, Playstation store,Nintendo e shop etc.
That its down right sad and degrading for the players. Which is why I say that if you must do so when the games are like 80% off cause sadly that's all they are actually worth.
All and all be mindful of the quality of games that you decide to drop your hard earned cash on. And don't ever preorder or pay full price as your honestly wasting your again hard earned money.

  22. I enjoyed scarlet and violet playing through… But I agree they haven't really put a lot of love into the games like they used to with HeartGold and SoulSilver which are my favorite games of all time. DLC is fine, but the base issues with the game and not getting fixed prior to shipping or fixed immediately after is not good. DLC adding new story, new monsters , and previous monsters is fine, look at the nexomon 2 DLC, which was also free AND amazing to boot!

  23. Sorry but I can't handle those nostalgia talk videos, they're always the same, even the mentioning of Halo. Look, let's be frank here: Those videos are absolute click baits trying to profit on people's nostalgia, aiminf exactly to those that grew up in the 2000s. I am one of those people, but I tend to research how things were before and I can tell you: the companies didn't change, the mentality didn't change and their main focus is undoubtedly what will NEVER change. AAA companies are money-making behemoths and like any other COMPANY, their sole focus is MAKING PROFIT. There's no other kind of company, they all focus on that, with the only difference being that some try to profit with satisfactory products and others don't (mostly the same ones from before).

You may always wear your nostalgia-goggles, but the fact is that the same companies you complain today are the companies you complained about before. Ubisoft, EA, Activision, Konami, Microsoft, Capcom, Square Enix (que king of fuck-ups I must say), they always had a new fuck-upevery year but you don't remember that because you have fond memories of that time and so it gets hard to associate those times with bad events.

AAA were NEVER, I repeat, NEVER made as "art", specially on the past. They were made to be that shiny, attractive and addictive thing that will bring a lot of profit to their company. It never was a minority of bad games that lauched because the GOOD ones were the actual minority. You don't remember that because you were probably too busy playing the trending AAA series of the time or even the mainstream indie game that popped out, but there was a LOT of trash being released while you were on you CoD match. Do a quick search on the AAA games that released during your nostalgia years and you will be surprised on how much trash you didn't even know existed at that time.

I could keep talking about how those videos are plain toxic nostalgia talks and how many man-children I've seen making the same videos, but just hearing the same cookie-cutter cancer talk about how other things are following a cookie-cutter cancer trend is making me more tired than I habe imagined. To you who had doubts about videos like those: Yeah, they're wrong and just want your ad sense. Not that Ed is making this video on that reason, he's just trying to bring diversity to his channel by making content out of a awful video. But anyway, videos like those are trash.

  24. Honestly I think a lot of this boils down to the industry, it’s not that there’s a lack of passion it’s that devs are forced to crunch to get a game over the finish line because the investors want a new yacht for Xmas and even if the game has record sales the company might fire them all to bump their profits. My second point is that the gaming community as a whole is an equal partner in the mess the industry is in now, everytime the industry does something shady there’s a bit of complaining about it but then the community just steps aside to let it happen. When companies do shady stuff we need to have a unified front to tell them to back off or it’s just going to get worse.

  25. Pokemon sort of encapsulates the problem to me. Game Freak are in a pretty unique position for a 3rd-party company co-owning their IP, but its still them vs Nintendo. So who's actually doing the talking and making the decisions?

Limiting the dex is something they clearly wanted to do since gen 5, they were against mons being added through DLC. That all changed with the Switch for some reason.

Then you look at Nintendo's other IP, doing DLC, patches, copying ideas, and even direct sequels. It can't all be a coincidence. It'd also explain the mixed signals behind dexit.
