Doctor Who: Westminster Bridge (1973) – Third Doctor

Here it is! An adaption of Murray Gold’s ‘Westminster Bridge’ track from 2005 adapted for the Third Doctor, in the style of old school Spy TV themes, using the sounds of 1970’s BBC music.

There’s woodwinds, sine wave generators (which I agonised over for days!), Clavichords, and simple percussion instruments. Before anyone comments, I know this isn’t what would we would hear in the 1970’s. This kind of music just isn’t something we would hear, but I tried to emulate the instruments that were used, rather than the overall style. The style was more in line with the James Bond theme, Mission Impossible, and Secret Agent Man than anything else. That in itself was a momentous task.

But I was determined to find a leitmotif for the Third Doctor, particularly after a viewer suggested the James Bond theme for him.

Although this probably took me the longest time to get right, out of any other track I’ve made so far, it was also a lot of fun. I hope you find it fun too!

I (think!) the MIDI is by Stephen Willis.

  1. The theme music sounds a bit like a mash-up of TV Avengers and Batman and the Saints with a little of Man From Uncle thrown in. But it's neat to see these clips thrown together it shows the 70s Doctor Who in action. The odd thing is Jon, actually appeared in The Avengers some years before with that actor in this series at the beginning. And did he also appear in Uncle as well? Know he also worked on the Saint to.

  2. Most people probably know this but in case you don’t, this song first played in the 9th doctor’s first episode where he faced the autons/nestene, which is the same enemy in the third doctor’s first episode

  3. We didn’t realise then, but Doctor Who would sometimes become “we’re like this now!” and then when the actor left, it wouldn’t be like that anymore 😢 savour it while it lasts!
