Disneyland transforms for the 100th anniversary celebration | Disneyland Construction 01-28-2023

Catching up on construction updates this week, of which there are MANY. Weโ€™ll start with a look at how the park has transformed with the 100th anniversary decorations, and in a very good way in my opinion. Updates also on the Adventureland dead end, New Orleans Square train station, hotel construction, and the pacific wharf remodel to San Fransokyo.

  1. I kept hearing "100th anniversary", but didn't know what it marked. So I looked it up.

1923 is when Walt Disney signed a contract with Margaret J. Winkler to produce a series called "Alice Comedies". The series was a collection of combined animation and live-action shorts in which a little girl named Alice (originally played by Virginia Davis) and an animated cat named Julius have adventures in animated landscapes.

Margaret J. Winkler was the founder of M.J. Winkler Pictures, a film distribution company that later became Screen Gems. In 1923, Winkler viewed a pilot reel called Alice's Wonderland that was submitted to her by Walt, who was a neophyte animator at the time. Winkler was intrigued with the idea of a live-action girl in a cartoon world, and signed Disney to a year-long contract. Walt and Roy Disney then formed a new studio, Disney Brothers Cartoon Studio. It was the first cartoon studio in Hollywood, and would eventually changed its name to Walt Disney Productions.

The Disneys advanced their production and business skills under Winkler, who insisted on editing all of the "Alice Comedies" episodes herself. Julius the cat, who was inspired by Felix the Cat, was added at her suggestion.

Winkler is also notable because she was the first female member of the Motion Picture Producer's Guild.

  3. Downtown Disney is an entity unto itself in my eyes. It has zero to do with anything. As for the Jazz Kitchen, I have never once set foot in it, and have zero emotional attachment to it.

  4. Regarding the money thing at the end of the update, you've got to try to think about how Chapek's priorities affected the way the company spent money. It may not have been enough money -for him-, but now that Iger is back and prioritizing the parks and guests, he's opening up the accounts to make sure that things that need to happen actually do. I'm not surprised about the change in messaging, that's the kind of thing that happens when regimes change like this.

  5. I was actually there for that conference and I was looking for you! I was probably heading towards Naples or sat down waiting for the line to clear. I was all ready to yell โ€œFresh Baked!โ€ I did see Chris Provost in the park in Friday and got to talk to him. Iโ€™m grateful to both of you for bringing us Disney when we canโ€™t be there.
