I think this is a compilation of several previous ones?
24:44 – is that an Ikebana vase in the control room of the Japanese submarine? I wonder if maybe they sent a raiding party ashore to gather the flowers… That could count as an actual "invasion".
It’s entirely possible the reason California has had such intense forrest fires recently is because of ballon bombs that hadn’t exploded yet. A fire gets going and then it comes into contact with one and sets it off, making it so much worse
I work next to the royal Alberta museum in Edmonton I wonder if there is anything in there collections.
Yes, with balloons. I think subs were seen off the west coast of the west coast and I thought they attack an area that was of little effect.
The latter… 🤷🏽♂️ ….I could be wrong.
The balloons, however, I know for a fact happened as some people were killed by them (finding them years later…something we in the US, especially in the Pacific Northwest and Inland Northwest ever think about, though they are a real but very unlikely threat if found)
There were only 6 enemy-caused casualties on the U.S. mainland in the entirety of WW2. A Fu-go balloon bomb that landed burst when kids in a picnic tried to play with it.
I’m sorry, but the first person who successfully attacked continental USA was, as far as I know, general Francisco Villa, who assaulted and sacked Columbus, New Mexico, in 1916.
I've got to ask, at 14:00, is that a DRIVE-IN THEATER in the background, and if so, which one?
That reminds me of how the British killed more people on the ground with Artillerly than planes during the Battle of Britain with unexploded shells falling to earth (well they had to go somewhere didn't they??)
Ellwood is also the location of the annual gathering of Monarch Butterflies in winter
Makes me think of the Clive Cussler book Black Wind
The Japs should have Attacked the Panama Canal that way the Usa would have to go around Sth America The Antarctic and come up with or around Sth Africa ?????????
In those early days when the US was on the back foot the Japanese could have made attacks on coastal facilities but it’s unlikely they could have made much impact except on morale.
The US west coast, in particular, has always been vulnerable to anyone who could reach it with enough firepower and tactical capacity to do real damage. The US military has always depended on its relative isolation and large mass as its primary defense. It's no surprise that the only serious defense that could be raised was against a fake attack in the location of their choosing.
HOLLYWOOD!
Fabulous! I love these omnibus videos, they're a great way to spend my down time.
Thanks Doc!
I wonder if Fu Go name of the incendiary ballon was used because it sounds similar to Fugu a blowfish.
i never knew abt the mini subs already in the harbor thatnks mark for another great story 🥰
My great-aunt was at Fort Stevens during the attack. In the morning she got up and walked down to the beach with her Rolleiflex and shot pictures of craters in the sand. Meanwhile in Portland, my father was in medical school. They were living with black outs and brown outs and during a black out one of his med school classmates crashed his headlight-less car and was killed. Ironically, the fellow student was a Japanese American.
My parents met working at Lockheed in LA and were married in April, 1942. They told me about the submarine attacks.
The hysteria must have been way over the top. When I was a kid growing up in the '50s/early 60s near Bancroft, Nebraska, there was still a wooden lookout tower on a hill in town. I can't imagine what they were thinking. This is about as far from an ocean as you can get in the US.
I'm a Brit ex=squaddie TA(equal to the US National Guard)we were in Germany on a work up exercise, to replace any troops needed for the Falklands war(and Putin please note it was a war)I remember our HQ sigs put on BBC overseas on speaker, we were tactical in a forrest, to listen to an MP back home, in Westminster stating to the commons, that the Brit Army should invade Argentina Mainland, I'm sure some of us regardless of compo rations, had to cross our legs whilst in fits of laughter,
Vaporizing LA-LA land – lolling hard!
Very interesting Mark Felton, very interesting indeed.
I'm pretty sure the great war hero, CPT "Wild Bill" Kelso, got them Japs with his P-40. "Real Japs??" "Naw, wooden Japs! Whadaya think, Tonto??!!"
A Fascinating history lesson; thank you.
My mother was living Santa Monica with her aunt and uncle when the "attack" on Los Angeles occurred. She said there was an anti-aircraft battery nearby that was firing.
As a very young reporter at Eureka, CA, Humboldt Times I covered Nobuo Fujito’s visit to Brookings, OR, in 1962. His 1942 bomb had started a small fire on Mount Emily near Brookings and he was invited to the small town to commemorate the 20th anniversary of Fujita’s attack. Some veterans group opposed the visit but he made the trip, was greeted warmly and was taken for a flight over Mount Emily in a light plane.
Oregon
😮As a young reporter at Eureka, CA, Humboldt Times I covered pilot Nobuo Fujita’s visit to Brookings OR, in 1962. He had been invited to the small town to commemorate 20th anniversary of Fujita’s bomb attack on a forest near the town.
Did you use an air mattress inflator as an air raid siren?
Well done as always. I learn so much from your videos. Thank you.
And while the Japanese were sending bombs, held aloft by a paper bag to the US West coast, Inland the allies were building an atomic bomb. No amount of fighting spirit on the part of the Japanese was going to be enough to win such an uneven contest.
The Ni’ihau incident after Pearl Harbor where 3 Japanese Americans helped a downed Japanese pilot also cast Japanese residents in a poor light. The pilot was finally killed by Hawaiians and one Japanese American committed suicide and the others were arrested. The Canadian PM called up the US Navy to shell Vancouver island? Hard to believe especially to keep it secret for over 80 years. The gunnery was poor during the attack on refinery, so why was it unbelievable they missed at Vancouver island.
