One of the most famous Tiger battles took place on July 8th 1943 during the Battle of Kursk when supposedly a lone Tiger under the command of Franz Staudegger destroyed 22 T-34s. The Soviet’s fielded a total force of 50 to 60 Russian tanks. How could 1 tiger hold against that many tanks? This episode is still hotly debated. What really happened there? We use both German and Soviet sources to shine some light on the incident and show you both sides of the story in this film.

For the German side we used internet articles “Panzer Aces Wittmann and Staudegger at Kursk” and “Revised footnote on Staudegger” by Christopher A. Lawrence, and also “Franz Staudegger – German Tiger Ace in the Battle of Kursk” by Evan Pinter.

For the Soviet side we looked through archive documents in Russian, scans of which can be found on the site of TsAMO, “Memory of People” page. First one is ”Excerpt from the War Diary of 26th Tank Brigade from June 23rd to July 6th of 1943”, second – “Combat Directive for units of 2nd Tank Corps for July 7th – July 8th 1943”, and third – “After-action report of 2nd Tank Corps for July 1943”.

  10. I definitely find the likelyhood of taking out T-34's with HE, other than disabling a bit fanciful on the German side. Though it's not unheard of, given a 75mm sherman smashed a panthers side turret with 3 HE shots. Unfortunately without a time machine we'd never know for sure. Nazi Germany and the Soviets were both well known for high propoganda

  14. Years after Pearl Harbor I believe the United States built a tank which had a powerful shell which matched the Tiger tank, but the steel was thicker than the Tiger and couldn’t be defeated by the Tiger tank .

  15. This channel tells the good side of the Nazis when they fought Russia, but they forgot that the death of Russian soldiers was a joint struggle against fascism and Nazis, we were born because of the results of past history

  17. There is incentive for Germany to inflate the results of this tank battle and overplay Staudegger's achievements for PR purposes. The tiger was an awesome machine but hardly the Wunderwaffer the Germans tried to make it out to be. Its more a crew thing than it is a wonder weapon. There are operators who can kill you with a straw, a paper clip and chewing gum, its the crew that made the tiger so formidable.

  26. People misunderstand the effectiveness of HE against armor. Besides the things from video games such as overpressure, a 88mm high explosive round will destroy machinery inside the vehicle in proximity to the impact, will absolutely screw over the crew inside from the energy dispersed through the tank from the impact and explosion whilst also if hitting in any area with top armor such as the area next to the turret will let the explosion blow through the thinner armor plating into the vehicle causing fire and spalling to enter the vehicle. HESH was made as for one with this principle utilizing large calibers to maximise the effect of the squash heads.
