Diana's Revenge – Episode 2 – British Legendary Campaign

Not often you get a story of loss and vengeance all in one episode but the HMS Diana somehow manages it! Its not all battle action though as we lay down a new class of fast protected cruisers, and the follow ups to HMS Dreadnought, the mighty Bellerophon class.

This campaign was recorded using Admiralsnackbar’s balance mod which you can find here https://forum.game-labs.net/topic/40790-uad-rebalancing-mod-for-13-v1/

No sooner than Munro establishing himself as a great commander in handling the war against the Austro-Hungarians, the Admiralty decided to promote me to Secretary of the Admiralty and assigned me to be his secretary. I have been a big fan of him from the first day of his office, and I was excited. However, I managed to remain as composed as possible. Soon after, though, I received word that we had lost one of our heavy cruisers. However, I later got word that the light cruiser, HMS Diana, sank the Austro-Hungarian's last heavy cruiser. Now, with all of their ships sunk, it is only a matter of time before the Austro-Hungarians agree to a peace treaty or have their nation disintegrated. Our research teams are also hard at work as they have successfully unlocked the next dreadnought hull. To take advantage of this wonderful opportunity, Admiral Munro has ordered the shipbuilders to build three ships of the new Bellerophon-class dreadnought battleships. He also made sure to improve relations with the Germans as we cannot risk sending our ships to deal with both the Austro-Hungarians and the Germans simultaneously in case the former starts sending new ships in order to deal with our blockade.
Join us next time as we find out how the war against the Austro-Hungarians will end, whether the Germans will declare war on us, and how the three new dreadnoughts will perform in the Royal Navy should once they are completed.

  2. The instant I see conditions like your first battle, I don't even consider the battle an option. I turn the ships away and run. The new weather system is complete garbage and wastes a lot of what can be very limited game time. If I want a goddamn coin flip, I'll hit the auto-resolve at the beginning battle menu! Also, it's been my experience that when a nation has only 1 or 2 ships left, they become virtually indestructible. I don't even bother trying to kill them when they are down to around 5 ships.

    Nestor’s reported accuracy is 25%.

    The enemy ship shows 11%.

How then is the enemy ship landing a shell every few seconds while Nestor struggles to get a few hits in a minute?

  4. I might play ambushes if they let me pick sea state/time or at least showed me. ie if I had 3 DDs and knew it was night at close range vs 1 CA without radar, I'd try it. But not knowing before hand? Nope

Dear devs: I enjoy watching Brother Munro play this game.

Watching Brother Munro play this game, with its bizarre modeling of economics and politics, UI issues, and outright coding defects that persist over years of development, is why I have no interest in buying it.

You may have gotten better results if you’d not rushed the DDs ahead, and instead kept them closer to the CL, forcing the enemy to disturb its own accuracy by dodging torpedoes while allowing one or even two of your own ships to fire at the enemy while not taking any return fire.

  7. The Bellerophon Class

    The Times: 12 October 1903

The Admiralty has tasked the Director of Naval Construction to design a battleship class as a follow up of the HMS Dreadnought. Again utilizing the Mark III 12” gun, but utilizing a second elevated barbette aft to have two pairs of super firing twin turrets.

The class will carry eight 12”/40 guns in four twin turrets, a pair super firing forward and a pair super firing aft. There will be six twin 6”/45 guns added as a secondary, and 18 single casemate mounted 3”/35 guns. An underwater torpedo tube mounted aft is primary positioned to balance the ship. With a designed speed of 22 knots from one funnel venting natural boilers powering the new engine technology, the ship has a designed 30,825 indicated horse power giving the ship a range of 11,944 kilometers designed for home service. The crew complement is 1197. Build cost for the class is $59,824,390 with a monthly maintenance of $3,290,342. Construction time is 19 months.

Three ships will be built in the class to round out a division built around the HMS Dreadnought; the HMS Bellerphon, HMS Temeraire, and HMS Superb.

  8. A Taste of Revenge

    The Times: 12 April 1903

Having tangled with the Zara class armoured cruiser Sankt Pölten three months before and seeing their sister ship Wake rudely handled, His Hellenic Majesty Ships Turquoise and Tenedos, two British A-Class destroyers in Greek service were pleased to sail with the HMS Diana in an attempt to finish off the last Austro-Hungarian Republic Navy’s last ship. To find her escorting nine Austro-Hungarian merchant ships was a welcome bonus.

Sadly HHMS Turquoise and HHMS Tenedos did not take the correct opportunity to launch their torpedoes as they closed on the Sankt Pölten. The HHMS Turquoise was sunk with 93 of her 104 man crew. The HHMS Tenedoes sank with ten survivors. The HMS Diana had been pounding away at the Sankt Pölten, and had lost her torpedo magazine, when she sighted the convoy. Keeping her main battery on the Zara class armoured cruiser she set her 3” secondary on the merchant ships, nine 12 thousand ton ships with crews of 57 officers and merchant seaman. The HMS Diana sank the Sava, Triglav, Tugendhafte, Dandalo, Kronprinzessin Erzherzogia Stephanie II, Szeged, Camaeleon, Arthemisia, and the class lead Styria. All the while she was keeping her 6” guns on the Sankt Pölten. With the transports cleared away the HMS Diana could now engage the Sankt Pölten, keeping her at the edge of torpedo range so the Diana could maneuver against any launch, this proved a wise tactic as the Sankt Pölten attempted another spread of torpedoes. It looked, as the HMS Diana avoided the launch the battle between the cruisers would be indecisive just as the flooding overwhelmed the Sankt Pölten’s damage control. The Sankt Pölten sank with 648 of her 708 crew.

The HMS Diana took 177 casualties in the battle, and rescued 21 Greek sailors, 60 Austrian Naval personnel, and 38 merchant seamen.

  9. Building a Fast Protected Cruiser

    The Times: 3 March 1903

The Director of Naval Construction has proposed a new class of ships, the Fast Protected Cruiser, to supplement the fleet. Designed around the 6”/40 gun, she would have three single turrets mounted aft in a double super firing arrangement, which one wag of a junior officer dubbed ‘super duper firing’, and one single turret firing forward. The class is designed with a top speed of 29.5 knots, amazing for a 8500 ton ship. Tentatively designated the Interceptor class, the design is awaiting approval by the 1st Sea Lord and the First Lord of the Admiralty.

  10. At the Gates of Spalato

    The Times: 21 December 1902

The active fleet of the Austro-Hungarian Republic has been reduced to the Zara class armoured cruiser Sankt Pölten, the Aspern class protected cruiser Aurora, and the Cobra class torpedo boat T-1. Though our task force is blockading the Strait of Otranto at the base of the Adriatic, we still send patrols deep into the Adriatic Sea to hunt for commerce and Austrian ships.

The Argonaut class armoured cruiser HMS Nestor and the Tribune class semi-armoured cruiser HMS Diana had the duty on a dark and cloudy night December night outside the port of Spalato. Sighting the enemy coming out of port, the HMS Nestor drove to starboard as the HMS Diana sailed to port to bracket the enemy. The HMS Diana and the Aurora exchanged fire before the Diana got two 3” hits on her aft belt, penetrating it and causing flooding. A further hit destroyed her torpedo magazine just after the Aurora launched on the HMS Diana which took two hits flooding the ship. The HMS Diana was ordered to retire but kept her fire up on the Cobra T-1. The HMS Nestor took hits aft that started flooding and a hit that destroyed her torpedo magazine. The torpedo boat Cobra T-1 reported sinking just as the HMS Nestor took a torpedo hit from the Sankt Pölten and began to flood in more compartments. Finally the HMS Nestor’s 8” gun got a solid flooding hit on the Sankt Pölten but the HMS Nestor lost her battle with the sea while the Sankt Pölten gained control of the flooding. She slunk back into Spalato while the HMS Diana limped back to Valletta.

The HMS Nestor lost 529 of her 546 man crew. The HMS Diana suffered 75 casualties. The Aurora lost 100 of her 418 man crew. The T-1 lost 46 of her 50 man crew. The Sankt Pölten suffered 57 casualties.

  12. I haven't played in at least 6 months. Let me get this straight: the stuck ladder aiming bug is still there, the secondary weapons stopping primary weapons firing bug is still there, the 1/2 guns not firing every other salvo bug is still there and now there is a bug preventing aft turrets from firing? And torpedoes still don't try to aim unless they are in arc, and apparently someone found out the AI knows where all your torpedoes are within 13km. It's baffling.

  13. I still wonder what Dreadnoughts would’ve been called had Michigan been completed first

    Michigans sounds strange, but eh,
My guess would’ve been super warships or super Ironclads or something

  15. The torpedo struggles are something I never understood myself, either. You have your ships approach the target in a straight line, they are literally only required to put the fish in the water and yet… nothing. And then they get sunk in retaliatory salvos.
