ABOUT US

We’re the Lockwoods. And we’re traveling the world to experience—up close and in person—all the natural wonders and distinct cultures that our kids would otherwise be consuming only through textbooks and TV. We think it’s a better way to learn and we’re working hard to fund this little experiment in the hope that our kids will grow up wiser, kinder, and more grateful for the beauty of our diverse planet and its people.

  3. The clear white thingy in Chendol/Cendol is not lychee but is mangrove palm fruit (Nypa fruiticans) where this type of palm grow at mangroves all around South East Asia. Lychee is soft and white and not clear looking jelly. In Malaysia we call it as 'Buah Kabong' and that mangrove palm we call it 'Nipah'. Even though Cendol is originally from Java, Indonesia, and the essential element is green jelly and shaving ice which make it different than Halo Halo in Philippines, or Bingsu in Korea.

In Malaysia we have two types of shaving ice dessert.; 1- Chendol which has so many varieties; Malay Cendol which is normal green jelly mixed with shaving ice, red beans, sweet corn, 'buah kabong' and pouring with rose syrup and condensed milk, Nyonya Cendol in Melaka, Indian Cendol, and Cendol you had in Penang is mixed between Chinese and Nyonya Cendol. Another type of cendol is mixed with Durian, and we call it as Cendol Durian. In the east coast of Malaysia mostly Kelantan you can can find a unique cendol mixed with fermented sticky rice and we call it as 'Cendol Pulut Tapai'. (Fermented Sticky Rice Cendol)

2- Ais Kacang (Peanut Ice) – this shaving ice without green jelly and uniquely Malaysian, with all elements of Cendol except the green jelly adding up with fried peanut sprinkles on the top. Another popular name for this dessert is ABC short for Air Batu Campur (Mixed Ice)
