P2W games die in the West because, surprisingly, the West actually does not tolerate it. Sure, LA will be successful for another few months but eventually all the casual players will progress, see the game for what it is, and quit. F2P players will get burnt out, tired, and realize they have to treat the game like a job, and quit. All you have left are exactly who you built the game for, whales who invested so much they refuse to let go of a dead game because sunk cost fallacy. All the while the elitists and streamers will simply go back to playing in KR. This game is not designed for 95% of the people who play it, and I'm not just talking P2W, I'm talking difficulty in raids. And that's gonna be a tough pill to swallow.
Hi, Korean here. What that guy says is unfortunately not wrong. Not saying it's good, just that sometimes some truths are unfortunate and shitty. I think another reason that single-player games, indie games, or non-mmo games on a global scale and AAA quality never came out of Korea was the country's social atmosphere and government. I don't have all the details but from what I remember, especially in the 2000s, a lot of talent in the gaming industry often times ended up going abroad to seek opportunities because government policies/support regarding media/entertainment and the general social/public atmosphere didn't really make it easy for aspiring devs and companies to have creative freedom in the gaming industry. This also applies for korea's animation industry as well. A lot of talent went to Japan to work for their studios. Present day this is a lot less prevalent due to globalization (globalization is adouble-edged sword mind you, but in this case i'm all for it) and hopefully Korea's able to rise up as a more prominent and well-known powerhouse in the gaming industry. I've just had a lot of non-korean friends who went for the longest time thinking ragnarok, lineage, and etc was a japanese game xD hopefully that will be occuring less in the future! Feel free to criticize me, I'm mainly typing from fragments of memories and experience lol

Hello everyone, I am a game dev also and I love studying game design and have studied games and their monetization methods too. Feel free to hate me for what I am about to say. From what I realized, every free to play game is basically pay to win since free to play games are designed to maximize profit, and not fun. Also, these type of games cater to different players' "win" condition. In a F2P game, it is mainly about retention. There are various statistics that proves that the more a player plays, the more he is likely to pay. So notice all those time gating things, daily quests, weekly quests, etc? Those are for retention stuff so you are forced to stick on the game for a long time. In terms of shop items that can be obtained by grinding, we make you have a choice in getting what you want either you spend alot of time in playing the game or just pay. Doing that blurs the p2w part of the game and makes it acceptable since most people with lots of time just say "The game is absolutely free and you can just grind that item for X days". You choose whether you value your time or your money. Some others value their time so of course, devs get the money. The balance in monetization is gauged by how acceptable it is to the gamers. Going back to "win" conditions, it varies from player to player. According to Bartle, there are four types of players: socializers, explorers, achievers, and killers. Killers are the competetive type of people. They like to see other people loose. So like giving them advantage in pvp is the way get money from them. Achievers are the ones that are after points and status. These are the players who gloat over their iLvl. so how do you help them get that? Convenience like Crystalline Aura and Mari's Shop. Socializers are the ones who want to interact with other people in games. So what can you sell them? Costumes, mounts, pets, etc. Lastly explorers are people after the story, looking for easter eggs, and any other secrets the game has to offer. Sadly, it is hard to make money from these type of people since the thing they will only buy is content so they can explore more. So even in a f2p game that has only skins is still pay to win since it caters to socializers and for them, looking cool is their "win" condition. The reason why companies prefer to make f2p games or games as a service than games as a product is because f2p games potentially makes more money than the other model since there is no limit on how much money a player would spend. Last point I have to make is game companies are also businesses; not a charity, and what's the main purpose of a business? Maximize profit. So that is why f2p games are the way to go.

One detail that needs to be mentioned is that while it is true people keep buying thr BS which enables and empowers these companies to keep making the BS, Many people buy the next installment in the hope that it will be different.
And also, the reason why, when something different foes come about, it's not the different element that pushes people away. The deves always seem ti invariably find some way to shoehorn some BS idea that nobody asked for at any time and go "The players will love this," and are shocked when they don't.
In fact, one of the things I find annoying is, in an active community where people share ideas and bounce "what if" scenarios off each other can come to a general consensus that it would be a good thing if the devs would include it. The devs actually tell the community they are putting forth the effort to listen and act on what they hear. Then they turn around and deliver shit that nobody even mentioned. And they cite feedback from the community. LOL… which community. Because it certainly wasn't the one actually playing the game…

In classic wow, mass reports were used by pvp guild too, in order to monopolize the top pvp rank. Anyone got too close to it, would just be sidelined by mass reporting. By the time you got someone at Blizzard to actually take a look at your ban, instead of just spamming auto replies at you, your rank already decayed.
