There is much desire involved when we find our personal identity undesirable. This can be explained by understanding Eros(Life Drive) and Thanatos(Death Drive) as they are named in psychoanalysis. And how they relate to our experience of self. Sometimes we have to gaze upon what we value in others to form someone we can love in ourselves. I go into more detail in this video.
