DeSantis signs bill stripping Disney World's self-governing status

A new Florida bill will dissolve the Reedy Creek Improvement District, stripping Disney World of its longtime self-governing status in Florida. NBC News’ Vaughn Hillyard reports on how the bill came about after former Disney executive Bob Chapek spoke out against Gov. Ron DeSantis’ efforts to restrict schools from teaching sexuality and gender.

  1. disney needs to cut off the water and sewer services to the orlando area……tell them to dig their own well and build their own sewer system both are owned by disney on disney property……

  2. If you have no problem with the rewards afforded to Disney then you should have no problem with them being punished. It has to go both ways, like a doggy door. Disney overstepped their bounds when they assumed a large portion of their consumer base would take their side against DeSantis’ parental choice bill. It turns out they were wrong and the brainless Hollyweirdos misrepresenting the bill did not help.

  3. There's something that makes me question what I know from Disney Movies.

Is this love from what Wall-E, Princess and the Frog, Tangled, and Frozen (Anna and Hans) for example has shown… pre-sexual engagement? Dates are usually most often with that.

Next question: If you "are" or "would be" a parent, Would you allow your child to watch you and your husband/wife date?

Edit: I forgot to say that I've been very observant.

  4. Good for Groomer Ron, stripping Disney instead of high school girls
Though in that suit he looks more like meatball ron, though I would never call him meatball ron

  5. Good its always been a Joke. Walt Disney told Florida he was going to make a future city. Walt died in 66 and instead of making a City Disney built a theme park but had the tax status of a private town which is what Walt promised to Florida. Its about time they lost that status. Disney never lived up to their end of the bargain.

  6. >>>Disney sux. It was great. Not now and never again. Why? Simple. Walt Disney is dead. Gone. Buried. When he died, so did the heart and especially the soul of Disney. Yes, Disney has no soul. Fact.

  7. For anyone cheering or concerned about the passage of this bill, you should probably understand that the bill doesn't actually do anything significant and certainly doesn't abolish any important privileges or exemptions that Disney enjoyed. The only relevant thing this bill does is rename the Board and give the power of nominating and appointing it to the Governor, which is actually unconstitutional and could easily be contested in court because it removes the ability of the local landowners to elect their own local authorities. Sure, those landowners are mostly just Disney, but it's still just as unlawful as removing the right to elect town councillors and giving that to the Governor instead, so no uncorrupt judge is going to uphold it.

The bill does, however, remove a number of superfluous privileges that were issued to the Board back when the main plan was to build EPCOT, such as the ability to independently build and operate airports, major civic venues (like stadiums), and also… nuclear power plants. As far as I could find, none of the various building categories that have been removed from the Board's purview have ever actually been built by Disney, and have never been proposed outside of conceptions for EPCOT. So while DiSantis is misrepresenting and even outright lying about what the bill actually accomplishes so he can claim a win against Disney, at the same time Disney couldn't care less about the new "reforms" and could easily have the Board appointment struck down if they thought it would be a problem for them.

Because what the bill doesn't remove is all of Disney's various financial privileges and exemptions, which would have involved transferring around $1B or more of the Board's municipal debt (a relatively typical amount for a local authority like that) to surrounding municipalities whose ratepayers would have had to foot the bill. It also doesn't remove the privilege that is the most important to Disney, which is the ability to autonomously build, manage, regulate, and finance all of the building and infrastructure categories that it actually cares about. Disney uses the powers of the Board to approve and build both the public infrastructure that supports its park and the residential communities that support its employees, which are both paid for through a combination of the Board's bond issuing power and the rates paid by local landowners (mostly Disney itself). Nothing about that has been changed by this bill apart from who appoints the Board in question.

Now of course, Disney's ability to exercise all of those privileges it cares about is now tied to a new Board which they no longer appoint and control, but honestly there's only two ways that this goes down: either DiSantis has quietly agreed with Disney to appoint board members who'll agree to whatever Disney wants in return for Disney not throwing millions of dollars at every political challenger he ever faces, or Disney will throw as many millions of dollars as are necessary at a lawsuit to have the Board and its unconstitutional appointees struck down. Personally, I'm betting on the former, as this bill wasn't supposed to be ready for another few months, but now all of a sudden it gets passed out of nowhere and Disney appears to be completely okay with it (I'm sure their lobbyists were very busy greasing palms in Tallahassee), but we'll have to wait and see whether or not Disney decides to initiate any legal proceedings against the bill.

  13. Disney really should cut their losses, take a one time big economic hit and get out of Florida. I'm sure there are many states that would love to have all those jobs and just be done with 3rd world Florida. Since the politicians in Tallahassee appear unable to stop making fools of themselves, their voters and their state, it is not likely to get better anytime soon.

  14. Well that's what they get if they want to become a political activist company. Nobody asked Disney to sacrifice themselves in a debate they didn't really understand or care about outside of positive PR

  15. The newest members of the the Board. Anyone know the answer. Fox. Now you have a very large corporation involved in the attempted overthrow of our election system and admitted liars and collaborators. They get to run a park aimed at children. The money involved in this "chaos" is probably going to be used to help him run for president.

  16. I think Disney in Florida is done, this is March 28,2023 Disney is set to lay off 7,000 workers. I also believe that Disney, will discontinue operating it's Orlando Fl. location with in 3 years, In the past the only way Disney could successfully operate in Florida was buy self Governing but now that this has been stripped from Disney and a new governor approved board of trustee's is running the show, Disney will collapse with in 3 years. I also believe the only reason DeSantis made this move is for the 280 plus acres of land. It will be interesting to see how this play out, but if Disney Exec's are smart they will cut there losses and fold up shop and leave. I also believe that the state of Florida will make Disney use more of the states resources in order to control them and it will cost Disney a lot and they know it. Right now the people in charge of the Disney park in Florida is the state

  17. Well now, this turned out to be a waste of the governor’s time.
He has zero authority over Disney and knows if they leave, the state will lose billions.
It was all just poorly-executed political theater.

  18. Read the Federal Supreme Court case from Massachusetts 1982
    Larkin V's Grendel's den .,459-US-116 ~ 16C
    Decided Dec. 13, 1982
    (8 to 1 opinion)
Written by Chief Justice – Warren E. Burger

It says basically. That the private board created to try and stop DeSantis new 5 person legal government body from taking over and making new decisions.

Disney's new private organization they just empowered. Because it is a private entity.
The government cannot delicate its power over to a private entity. Any powers that are ordinarily vested in government agencies.

Disney's the lame duck and not the other way around,.

That's how I read the decision..
