Sergeant Major and Command Sergeant Major are the same rank. Command Sergeant Major just denotes a Sergeant Major who has a command (in charge of soldiers). My understanding is that he was frocked. Frocking is when they need someone to fill a job role but they don't currently have the staff so someone one rank below fills that slot. They are allowed to wear the rank they were frocked to but do not actually hold that rank. Often times to can retain the rank you were frocked to if you complete the required schooling and training to hold that rank. In this case he did not complete the required schooling or training so he was technically still a First Sergeant.

He isn’t national guard ranks. He is army ranks. The national guard has army and Air Force in it. Their ranks are based on Air Force and Army ranks. So he retired as a Master Sergeant not a Command Sergeant Major.

I'm a peacetime veteran. Never served in wartime and never went to combat. I would never insult those who did by claiming that I had. I would also never insult the people who served with me by acting like their service wasn't good enough. We did what was asked of us, never knowing what would be asked next. We were lucky, but we have no reason to lie about what we did. Walz insults our service by pretending that he carried a particular type of firearm "in war." If he is acting like his own service wasn't good enough, then he is saying the same thing about mine. I'm not okay with that.
BTW, my daughter is a Command Sergeant Major in the regular Army with a Combat Action Badge. I haven't asked her what she thinks of this, but she would probably be charitable and give him the benefit of the doubt (at least out loud).
The rank of Sergeant Major is a rank. Command Sergeant Major is a billet (job description) held by some Sergeants Major. A First Sergeant is also a billet, normally held by a Master Sergeant. In the Marines, it's a little different, but the pay grades are the same. Walz wasn't ever an E-9. He was "frocked" (allowed to wear the rank of) Command Sgt Maj. but wasn't actually eligible to be promoted to that rank permanently. He retired at his final paygrade of E-8, Master Sergeant. To qualify, he would have had to finish the Sergeants Major Academy, and then commit to two years service afterwards. He didn't even finish his enlistment. He dipped to run for Congress, which was not required. The only reason why anyone would leave the Guard or Reserves to run for Congress would be that he knew he was going to deploy, making it impossible to run.
Tim I saw a good break down of what happened by angry cops, he was giving the rank of e9 with conditions he had to meet to keep that rank when retiring he did not meet those conditions therefor he should have been dropped down to e8 but he skipped out on signing his discharge papers and somehow it was over looked at the time so yes his original discharge papers says e9 but once the mistake was caught everything was updated to the rank he should have gotten e8

In those years the army was having trouble recruiting people and in order to have enough soldiers for units to deploy to the sandbox, they were using stop laws to keep soldiers in when units were being deployed downrange. He would have been stop laws to keep him in during pre deployment because it was difficult to get replacement leadership. Also, by leaving Like, he did. I can guarantee the moral of the soldiers he left behind would have been greatly affected that their leader was abandoning them. Then, he used the sacrifice that the soldiers he abandoned earned to further his political career. Then he is using his so-called war expertise to push anti 2nd amendment legislation to ban weapons used in war! When he went to war, what war? never webt to war! So yes! He is a coward, and he is committing stolen valor.
Master Sergeant to First Sergeant is a lateral promotion. Same for SM to CSM at E-9
he prob retired active duty as an e-8 and you tend to get promoted when you transitioning to guard is what I've heard, I have not looked into him though

the command master sergeant school he went to required him to remain in service for 2 years and he then choose to retire before serving that 2 years, because he would have been sent to Iraq. Therefore he could not get the Command Master Sergeant rank, an worse, he took that spot in the school that someone else could have been given.
I was 6 months away from being complete with my first enlistment when 9/11 happened. We did not find out how bad the attack was until 3 weeks after 9/11. The day the attack hapoened, I went to my commamd and asked them to prepare my paper work for a 6 year enlistment. Tim Walz is trash.
