Defence Minister Richard Marles has doubled down on his Party’s position against nuclear production on Australian soil.
Mr Marles was questioned about a $5 billion cheque to the UK for Rolls Royce to produce the AUKUS submarines’ nuclear reactors.
“We are not in a position to be able to build nuclear reactors here,” Mr Marles told Sky News Australia.
“If you went down that path, you certainly wouldn’t be getting our submarines in the timeframe that we need them.
“There is a facility in the UK right now which is building reactors for the British fleet – what we are doing is seeing an expansion of that.
“That is the quickest way and the most cost-effective way in which we can get those nuclear reactors into our own nuclear-powered submarines.”

Despite having been one of the most influential civilizations of antiquity, Carthage is mostly remembered for its long and bitter conflict with Rome, which threatened the rise of the Roman Republic and almost changed the course of Western civilization. Due to the destruction of virtually all Carthaginian texts after the Third Punic War, much of what is known about its civilization comes from Roman and Greek sources, many of whom wrote during or after the Punic Wars, and to varying degrees were shaped by the hostilities. Popular and scholarly attitudes towards Carthage historically reflected the prevailing Greco-Roman view, though archaeological research since the late 19th century has helped shed more light and nuance on Carthaginian civilization.
Despite the cosmopolitan character of its empire, Carthage's culture and identity remained rooted in its Canaanite heritage, albeit a localised variety known as Punic. Like other Phoenician peoples, its society was urban, commercial, and oriented towards seafaring and trade; this is reflected in part by its notable innovations, including serial production, uncolored glass, the threshing board, and the cothon harbor. Carthaginians were renowned for their commercial prowess, ambitious explorations, and unique system of government, which combined elements of democracy, oligarchy, and republicanism, including modern examples of checks and balances.
It is unclear what term, if any, the Carthaginians used to refer to themselves. The Phoenician homeland in the Levant was natively known as 𐤐𐤕 (Pūt) and its people as the 𐤐𐤍𐤉𐤌 (Pōnnim). Ancient Egyptian accounts suggest the people from the region identified as Kenaani or Kinaani, equivalent to Canaanite. A passage from Augustine(The great elephant killer of 3500 elephants at the colesseum) has often been interpreted as indicating that the Punic-speakers in North Africa called themselves Chanani (Canaanites), but it has recently been argued that this is a misreading. Numismatic evidence from Sicily shows that some western Phoenicians made use of the term Phoinix.
Phoenix and Carthage: In a metaphorical sense, the term “Phoenix” is often used to describe something that has been destroyed and then reborn or restored. In this context, it could refer to the city of Carthage, which was a major Phoenician city-state and was destroyed by the Roman Republic in the Third Punic War in 146 BC2. However, Carthage rose again to become the capital of the Roman province in Africa
Meanwhile Australia hasn't had 1 house built for the homeless.

Labor's China Financed and Constructed Big Build will total over $100Billion. Participating in China's debt diplomacy, country wrecking policy.
Meanwhile, some journalists, who shown little interest in Victoria's shenanigans, get uptight about $5 billion here and there for the needed (20 years ago) acquisition of SSNs.
The problem is, the population does not have the capability to build anything nuclear. Bring back nuclear energy, educate and offer nuclear energy courses at University level. If India and China can build them, so can Australia.
Department of Defence is not the most appropriate branch of government to oversea AU's foray into nuclear energy.
Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water (DCCEEW),
The Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development, Communications and the Arts (DITRDCA) &
Department of Industry, Science and Resources (DISR) are much more appropriate agencies.
Let's avoid a Dr Strangelove moment 🤠 & power Australia's future with safe, modern reactor technology.
Labor refuses nuclear power but only for subs double standards
A bad time to join the military when the majority of ones service time will be shoveling sandbags to address the Climate Crisis….🥵
nuclear production outside of Australia…
WELL, THAT SOUNDS LIKE A WINNER
Stuttering gives you away Marles as we watch you scramble to lie ya way out of the question
AUKUS is a money pit for Australia. It’s guaranteed that the budget for AUKUS will balloon over $1 Trillion dollars by the time Australia gets the first nuclear powered submarine. Australia is desperate for more military equipment and when Donald Trump becomes president of the US, he’ll be exploiting Australia like there’s no tomorrow because for him, he sees $$$$.
Where is the press conference from Adelaide this morning?
So where will the steel for the rest of the build come from, given the Australian steel industry is under the pump.
Bio warfare with Covid vaccines is what we should be worried about, where’s your defence for this I know, cover it up and report excess deaths from Covid not the vaccines
i smell a RAT .
How much money does Scotty from marketing stand to make from these deals?
Get a licence to build Rolls Royce nuclear reactors and it's upcoming SMRs for Australia and the region.
How silly can any Australian government be ….as Keating said a while back the only winner here is the US military industrial complex.
Just get Peter Garrett back on the job…how do we sleep while our beds are burning?
How does he explain the open pool ligh-water nuclear reactor at Lucas Heights in Sydney. Did it just materialise out of thin air. This is the epitome of the stupidity of the ALP and the lap top class in general. Simply the "clueless with key boards".
Aukus, a bad deal for Australia.
Get rid of big cold bring in the portable nuclear power plants plug them in at any port instant electricity and cheap oh and build it around a submarine
Because the Unions are holding on to their 1970's "Nuclear ban" and in reality Australia couldn't build anything more complicated than a toaster.
Insanity!
Good question , lift the Nuclear ban !! Stop playing for votes
How you going to manage all this building Richard when we can't even keep the lights on it's impossible to pay the money you're extorting from taxpayers already was your ridiculous renewable fantasy
aukus exists to serve usa interests and is a disaster for aust
Nuclear Submarines…..for Australia……never happen….Dream on….
Premier Pete needs base load power to build nuclear subs but not allowed to have proven nuclear power plant but he can have untested hydrogen hub . I wonder what the voice to S.A voice to parliament will have to say to that .
