Defence minister announces government's response to Surface Fleet Review

Defence Minister Richard Marles has announced the government’s response to its Surface Fleet Review, says Sky News Political Editor Andrew Clennell.

The Surface Fleet Review is expected to release within the next week.

Mr Clennell said there has been speculation that the review Mr Marles is set to release will include “slashing the number of Hunter Class frigates the government is building from nine to a number like six or even three”.

“It is my understanding the review will not see Australia have less frigates,” Mr Clennell said.

“Although it is unclear if all of the Hunter Class will remain.”

  1. The Government never will and never have spent on building a strong defense force for Australia, always buying cheap stuff, never building and planning ahead, they have trillions in land establishments now they want to sell some of that off to bolster defense spending, All is quiet on the AUKUS front nothing happening there, and they wonder why no one wants to join up and everyone is getting out

  2. The only certainty is Labor will screw it up. Defence is not their bag, and apart from Kim Beasley and Joel Fitzgibbon, Defence has been handballed to Labor people who don't understand Defence and don't want the portfolio. Just look at Stephen Smith. He detested Defence given he got it as a consolation prize after getting kazumped to make way for Rudd as Foreign Minister. He then proceeded to throw Defence (and its people!) under the bus at every opportunity to avoid any damage to his own career.
