Welcome to our two-part supercut of Salvage Masters: It describes two major shipwrecks in Greece’s maritime history and the subsequent salvage operations. These incidents illustrate both the scale of environmental disasters and the difficulty and importance of rescue work in the maritime sector.
Episode 1: Masters of the Kursk
The almost impossible task of getting the nuclear submarine Kursk off the arctic sea floor before the winter set in was entrusted to two Dutch companies – Smit salvage with their unique cutting machine and Mammoet heavy lift, who built a special barge to do the job.
Episode 2: Rig on the Rocks
When the residents of the island of Lewis in the Outer Hebrides wok up to find an orange oil rig washed ashore on one of their most beautiful beaches, they pressed for quick action to remove it and keep the coast clean. The British government and Smit Salvage swung into action but the only hope was that the tides would lift it off once its oil tanks had been filled with compressed air. the atmosphere was tense and the wait all too long
Episode 3: SOS Syracuse
One of the most beautiful protected areas of Sicily was threatened by an empty chemicals tanker that washed up against the rocks during a storm. Smit Salvage ad Fratelli Neri were called in to protect the nature reserve and cut of the ship using the Mediterranean’s largest shearleg. A story of stunning Syracuse threatened by a steel monster.
Episode 4: St Gregory Grounded in Greece
As the Cabrera is made safe, the Greek salvage company Megatugs is called upon to save yet more ships: 2017 is an active year and the Megatugs salvage dossier grows. In May 2017 the St Gregory general cargo ship carrying a 30 thousand tonnes of sulphur ran aground at Kokkala, in the Peloponnese. Slavage Master and naval architects surveyed the ship and put together a plan of action, but in the mean time Megatugs was contracted to actually remove the aft section of the Cabrera. Stretched to their limits, they called in Smit Salvage to help
Episode 5: Ariana and her sisters
Four wrecks to be removed to clear out the Netherlands’ waterways, four ancient ships that pose a threat to the increased traffic on the sea approaches to Rotterdam and along the coastline to Northern Holland and two companies to do the work: Smit Salvage and Van den Herik. This is the story of the extraordinary clean-out ordered by the Dutch government and how machinery large and small was brought into play.
