With an update to the Deathwatch Index, all of the Kill Team datasheets have been changes and are looking much better. This warrants an update on how to play Deathwatch in the Black Spear Task Force detachment in 10th edition of Warhammer 40,000. This is a guide to Deathwatch for beginners and veterans and a detailed Index review of the units and how to play them, including Deathwatch list building advice.

agents detachment is the new low bar
Now, GW, for the love of god give the Deathwatch an updated upgrade sprue with Phobos, Gravis and Terminator shoulder pads!
Where are my suppressors? Are they safe, are they alright?
Just saying 10 termies with 7 th/ss and 3 missile pods with a chaplain for +1 to wound is spicy.
I got flicked over, since i have Firstborn only xD but hey, its cool DW is a 'faction' atleast
I'm of two minds with the indomitor kill team. They're crazy deadly, but part of that is relying on bad screening from your opponent and there are lots of things that roll over units without invulns.
Exocrines will be making their entire points cost back and then some by firing at them once.
The greatest thing about Deathwatch is that All of the Primaris Units allow mixed weapons… which is what Regular primaris frigging need.
If you add a Jump Captain to the Talonstrike, the majority Toughness becomes 4 until there is one casualty. IMO, keep the Talonstrike without a character. I suppose you can leave a Redshirt Intercessor at home, but that's kinda meh.
New Deathwatch is amazing.
I play Ultramarines 3rd Company. I have most of the Epic heroes but sometimes I donβt feel like using them (Calgar and Guilliman couldnβt possibly be in every battle).
I think for the battles where I just use my generic marines I will reorganise my squads into kill teams. 3rd company is called the Scourge of the Xenos and many of its members are Deathwatch veterans so I donβt see it as lore breaking to switch to this detachment from time to time.
Gotta admit, the Spectrus + Phobos Lieutenant is tempting, to stack the two move-after-shoot abilities, but since I currently have him on an Infiltrator Squad and a Phobos Captain with the Execute and Redeploy enhancement on another Infiltrator Squad, I think I'll keep it that way so that I have move-after-shoot spread out over the most units I can give it.
Can you break up kill team Cassius and use them as characters?
The biggest disappointment for me is that my entire 3k points of Deathwatch are vets. And I'm not looking to buy more to get primaris units. At least I can play with the rest of my Predators and Vindicator. So I'm back to normal.
With what i have, i cant wait to field
30 indomitor KT with 3 captain, 1 with beacon angelis, 1 with thief of secret, 1 Tome of Ectoclades.
10 spectrus KT with Librarian in Phobos.
And little things to fill in the points.
My 1st 1500pts game will be interesting
Any time I get tempted to actually play tabletop, I see things like meltas/flamers using kraken bolter rounds or Team Cassius, each member being an elite adeptus astartes, somehow ceasing to be adeptus astartes the moment they join forces…
Then I just stick to books and artwork.
I feel like this is what deatchwatch should've always been, at least with their bolter weapons more expensive but worth the extra points. Like the Fortis killteam with just intersessors is 40 points more but now they actually feel worth those extra points.
A little trick on the jump pack killteam. Those three jump intercessors with plasma pistols can take the overcharge casualties the inceptors trigger to keep them alive. Truly the JPI are just ablative wounds.
i think the phobos lieutentant doesn't stack? there's that rule about 1-per-phase on surge moves, iirc
also i don't think you can take chainfists with cyclones, because the way you take chainfists involves replacing the storm bolter for a storm bolter, but you can't replace the original storm bolter at ALL if you take cyclones. rip π
I am greatly amused by the spiritual successor to the Tactical Squad in the Deathwatch index. Ironically enough, I have some leftover marines from the Dark Vengeance set, and this almost seems like the best way to use the leftovers after taking out the basic bolter boys to run as as Intercessors.
Our local Deathwatch player is very happy with these changes, though they are having to shift around some models in the kill teams they already have, and I'm personally excited to play against these new and improved kill teams. It's looking like for their list they'll be taking a Librarian for their Fortis team and a Librarian in Phobos armour for their Spectrus team so I'm already trying to think of how to solve those two puzzles. It's going to be a fun game night on the 20th, I can guarantee that.
genuinely want to play deathwatch now but it's not an army i owned before they got temporarily killed and am now unable to buy into them. printing and 2nd hand are my only options so this will be a fun journey.
Hi and thanks for the hard work. Quick question: is your in-depth guide on how to start a Deathwatch army still viable, given the changes?
"You are not playing Space Marine 2 marines." Me remembering a very very old list from White Dwarf titled, "Movie Marines" ππππ ok don't think that was the EXACT chapter approv3d article's name, but is at least paraphrased. Essentially a 5 man squad supported by a rhino. Even under current rul3s…they'd be nuts π
HI Steven π
Can heroes from the space marine codex (like librerian, apothicaries, captains) join killteams? I haven't seen the rule
Happy deathwatch noises
Adding a captain to the jump unit wonβt mess up the majority toughness because leaders donβt count. Per the BRB you wound based upon the unit that the leader is attached to.
BACK IN BLACK!
Right, now the question is where's the best place to purchase 6 cyclone missile launchers? Anyone here have any suggestions?
10 Thunder Hammer Terminators in Vanguard Spearhead. Termi Chaplain with The Blade Driven Deep. I believe that could be a first turn charge with a built in rereoll with 30 Thunder Hammer attacks.
Inquisitor Draxos is the best leader for Fortis KT.
4:26 Okay, unironically those are some fantastic bike models. GW should've kept them.
So do i use the deathwatch codex wait for a new one or the index cards?
Can inquisitors still lead Deathwatch vets?
