  1. 99 Jeep sport 4.0 early model with distributor(166k), check for zero play on the rotor shaft, mine had quite a bit(.030), so I replaced it and idles smoother.
Check front output shaft on transfer case(np242) for zero play, yes zero, mine has just a little which causes a grinding type noise if you listed closely due to noisy bearing.

Replace control arm bushings upper and lower if you’re driving on road(62-68mph) and feel a little movement in steering wheel, after wheel alignment and all other repairs for death wobble.

There is nothing cheap about a Jeep, even if you maintain it. Hope this helps.

  2. I have had at least tie rod ends cause death wobble, ball joints cause of death level, track bar causing death wobble. All of those can be a factor to death wobble. What a lot of poeple miss after death wibble is that where your tie end sit in the spondle those holes where the pin goes through and ypu add your castle nut can be wollowed out. Hwve you ever has a castle nut tighten so much oast the holr where your cotter pin goes in ?. Time for a chamge. Jeeps hands fown are my favorite vehicles to work on and drive.

  3. I bought my XJ brand new in 97. It's a loaded sport. Looks brand new. 72k miles.
Just gave it to my 24 year old twin daughters.
We bought it when we were trying to get pregnant as our first family car.
Then we found out we were having twins…
Bought a brand new first diesel in the Pacific Northwest 2000 Ford Excursion.
Still drive them both every day.

  4. Trackbar bushings and the Control Arm bushings. It is never the Steering Stabilizer.
once you fix the Real cause, you can even take the stabilizer off.
Another thing to look for is the caster adjustment.

  5. I had 3 XJs. Every one of them needed the front end fixed about every 80,000 miles. Nothing makes your butt pucker like driving over some railroad tracks and finding yourself suddenly going sideways. I loved those things and have been looking for a clean one for a long time now.

  6. Letting the XJ go out of production was a major mistake. They've not done anything as good since. And good luck finding a good one for sale. Death wobble is common to all solid axle vehicles regardless of make of model. It's based on the problem of gyroscopic progression of two wheels linked directly. The track bar (panhard arm) is absolutely crucial to controlling this.
