Hey guys, this week was a hard one up here at Cerro Gordo. A “1,000 year flood” hit Death Valley right by us and completely washed out our road. Short term, it made it impossible to get up or down the road. Long term, this will mean we cannot get the trucks up the road needed to continue progress on the American Hotel and many other projects. This is an absolutely devastating blow in the series of devastating blows that seems to come with living up here.
The future of many projects is completely up in the air right now and may push the timeline into the winter, which would mean at least 6-8 months of no progress. BUT we’re doing everything we can to push through.

Hey, hoping you get the road sorted. At least there’s one thing can be said, the men who worked the mines knew a hard life and all these years later, nothing has changes. Your working hard and achieving goals with your bare hands. More than most folk do 🙂

Man that road was devastated. Great work in getting it at least passable. In the area I live, there were a lot of mining towns both in the alpine mountains and desert mountains around here. Watching your video made me think of just how huge of a task it was to cut the roads in the first place and maintain them once they were established back before the era of our heavy machinery.
There is an abandoned mine that I've hiked to a number of times over the years in the very high mountains near my home (the mine was called the Eva or Privateer mine). It's near the tops of the high peaks in the Nebo area. The roads that were cut to get up to that mine are incredible (valley floor is at around 4500 ft and the mine is, I'd estimate, at nearly 9000 ft or maybe more up towering mountains and deep canyons). The road is in pretty sad shape in spots now and really can't be driven in those spots by even an ATVs anymore. Maybe a dirt bike (maybe). I have carried a mountain bike up it a time or two (but usually just hike it). It's absolutely amazing that they could have cut those really technically challenging roads in the first place back when most of the work was manual labor, dynamite, and horses. And to see the road in your video all washed out is just very sad. I was really happy to see that you got it looking passable at the end of the video, where before it looked just impossible to do much with.
Love what you are doing there! I wish someone would take on a project like that in one of the dozens of ghost towns around Utah. Places like Gold Hill are so cool.
This might have been answered already, but do heavy rains impact the mines at all? I think at least one entrance is exposed to the elements right, so are they being flooded or damaged in any way, like the road? Also, I am absolutely inspired by your strength and tenacity Brent, a true paragon of hard work, determination and following your dreams 🙂

I am glad you are not giving up. If I weren't on the other side of the nation I would be up there trying to help. Hopefully, I can travel back out west and see Cerro Gordo. I read a lot about it in the past and it has fascinate me ever since. Good luck on all the repairs and future projects!!
