#DOAG . Death of a Game is a series dedicated to uncovering the mysteries surrounding the death of a game or company. nerdSlayer defines the term “death” in the context of the show as either… 1. Literally dead. 2. Had a mass exodus of players and never recovered (expectations etc). 3. The company ceased to exist. We follow a timeline of events, to uncover clues concerning why a game or company doesn’t do well, and attempt to put it all together at the end for a deduction explaining how or why the game failed based on the evidence gathered.

  1. Mint Blitz along with Halo Twitter were subtweeting and some were spreading around this video like wild fire. So far I have watched 21 minutes of this video. It is not only insightful, informative, and gives a historical timeline of Halo Infinite's lead-up in an objective manner, but it is not at all negative. The title and thumbnail caused an uproar from the Halo community without even watching the video. Justin, this is an excellent video. I just subscribed to you.

  2. watching MLG back in the day, in 480p streams… I miss it so much. Halo 1, 2, and even 3 (besides the bubble shield BS in matchmaking) were truly amazing experiences. Playing Halo2 and getting called a N word and a squeaker were some of my fondest memories of online gaming. Even MW2 didn't scratch that crap talking itch.

  3. Once upon a time Xbox Live Gold was needed to pay for online multiplayer. The decision to make Halo infinite crossplatform (like rocket league and more), they needed some way to make money. So instead of Xbox Live Gold covering the cost and making a nice profit, lootboxes and skins for money is the solution.

Combine this with a new game engine that needs to run flawlessly on infinite PC hardware variants, Xbox series and xbox one. The person who greenlit Halo Infinite knew that the launch could not go well (just look at the launch of Cyperpunk 2077, but they might have made som money and have now fixed much?).

  4. I think this is karma for Microsoft. They shut down Ensemble Studios after making their fifth consecutive successful title. They killed the best RTS developer in the world and so their gaming division became cursed.

  5. Halo 4 remains the only Halo game I truly love. Played 2 and 3 growing up but honestly their campaigns were shit, and I couldn't give a damn about the multiplayer facet of shooters. But I refuse to play any game after Halo 4, because they betrayed all the story and character development they had set-up in Halo 4 with the stories in the sequels that followed. I've been done with the franchise for over a decade now, and I've got no problems with never going back unless they swore to undo all the narrative fuckups of Halo 5 and 6 and continue Halo 4's more mystical/mythical feeling science fantasy direction.

  6. It shows how much you care for the series. Thanks for covering it. I think its time for me to move on from the series. I love the older games and will still play them from time to time. However, almost nothing 343 has put out has resonated with me. I will always have the memories tho.

  7. This seems like a similar situation to Blizzard where most of their devs that brought life and popularity to their respective projects were slowly pushed out over the years and replaced by talent centered around monetization and maximizing profits as opposed to creating a new enjoyable experience for the community.

  8. Big Team Battle IS what makes Halo, Halo.
Always has been, always will be.
Also was that fuckken Muda on the uninstalling fixes crashes clip? Pure gold.
And the "I know it when I see it" is a bad use of Supreme Court Justice Potter Stewart's 1964 description of a threshold test for obscenity. Its got its own Wikipedia entry.

I always love when the detective conan music kicks in, but this time, to get a direct acknowledgment to the anime was sorta of really satisfying
Was a good way to lift off the weight after an hour of your favorite series dying

  10. i play halo infinite as a solo player, and its next to impossible for me in ranked after all the changes. I cant spend enough time grinding to get out of plat 6 this season. I finished last season in diamond 6 halfway to onyx and season 2 in onyx. I only play against teams, i can't find games unless i play with expanded zones, so i mostly play against american players, as someone from europe with higher ping (or god forbid the australian games where i had 270 ping and against a 4 stack of aussies) and even getting randomly kicked out of 1/20 matches because it crashes loading into them. Last season I had a problem with games starting with less players and this season i am that player who doesnt make it into the game. and although its nice to see new maps, they dont feel good to play on and theres only like 9 of them in 2 years, and they even removed some of the new ones from the playlist.

  11. What I hate the most is the amount of shills that defend every bad corporate decision 343 makes, each one of those hurts the game and is "supposed" to increase profit… like when we found out about coatings, it was clear as a sunny day what the system was going to be like, and shills were all like "oh you haven't tried the system yet, so shut up and wait for release" – in the end it turned out to be exactly how we predicted, fricking shills, I hate them, if they hadn't slowed down the backlash on so many topics things might have been different

  12. The "god-awful progression system" could have been explained more in this video, and that system is why I personally quit playing Halo after completing all of the Tenrai events for all of its unlocks. Since it was not exhaustively explained in the video, let me explain it here for anyone who didn't or hasn't experienced it. Each week you get somewhere between 10-20 weekly missions. These missions can range from very easy (play X number of games) to very hard (kill X number of enemies with weapon Y in game mode Z). You have a limited number of rerolls to reroll a mission to be something easier or something harder (and if you paid for the battlepass, you can get more rerolls). Also, even though you start with 10-20 or so missions, you could only make progress for 3-4 missions at a time, and you did not get to choose which three missions to have at a time. So you can get randomly screwed over having a more efficient way to progress through all of your missions that would expire by the end of the week, so this means you have to dedicate more time if RNG was not on your side. Not only do these missions confer XP for battlepass progression, but completing all of these weekly missions for a given week then unlocks a final weekly mission which unlocks a designated cosmetic. This final weekly mission cannot be rerolled, it is the same for everyone, and if you did not finish it, you lose the chance to get the cosmetic. I can recall that it was week 2 or 3 from the start of release that the final weekly mission was kill three enemies with a vehicle. What ended up happening was that a significant number of players in Big Team modes would try to steal vehicles from their teammates and try to run over the enemies. Honestly, Big Team mode mostly became GTA for that week.

Players would completely ignore objective just to complete their missions, and I was one of those players. Some of these missions encourage you to play better, but a decent number of them simply encouraged you to play worse in order to make it easier for yourself to complete the mission. I believe that if a multiplayer FPS has an in-game system in place that incentivizes players to play worse or grief your teammates is an absolutely terrible system, for that kind of system will engender disillusion or even toxicity. So I stopped after getting all of the Tenrai cosmetics since that complete look was enough for me, and I did not want to participate in the system further.

I am a bit upset about the potential of the game. Compared to various other multiplayer FPS games, you are given the potential to customize quite a bit and for free. The battlepass also never expires, so you can get the cosmetics from the battlepass later without FOMO. But with the terrible progression system, I did not want to continue.

  13. Halo 3 effectively popularizing Random Matchmaking over selectable public lobbies as the only way to play online os still among the worst things to happen to online shooters
