#DOAG . Death of a Game is a series dedicated to uncovering the mysteries surrounding the death of a game or company. nerdSlayer defines the term “death” in the context of the show as either… 1. Literally dead. 2. Had a mass exodus of players and never recovered (expectations etc). 3. The company ceased to exist. We follow a timeline of events, to uncover clues concerning why a game or company doesn’t do well, and attempt to put it all together at the end for a deduction explaining how or why the game failed based on the evidence gathered.

  1. oh yeah, they added a single-player offline mode with the bots…but before people jump to conclusions…listen to this "just note that you need an internet connection to download and patch the game first". You still need the internet…you can just play after you access it one time. So it's still VERY much at risk for being shutdown, don't be fooled by delusional defenders.

(also too bad the bots suck and are useless)

  2. L4D was simple. That is what made/makes it great to this day. B4B is for sure a spiritual successor, but only if the soul died a little before its next life.
as an edit: Can't forget that lack of testing for difficulty at release. It was a REALLY poor release.

  3. I feel really sad because my wife and I truly enjoyed this game (over 500 hours of playing). We are also fans of L4D2 (with over 900 hours of playing). However, the gatekeepers have killed it. I can see the comments from the trailer before its release, and L4D2 fans were already too cynical about this game. It's disheartening. Can't we put an end to this elitism and gatekeeping attitude?

  4. If I never see another unnecessary God damn deck building system I will die a happy man. At first I tried to ignore B4B’s blatant issues, like how weak and awful the melee weapons were, how there are no audio cues, and how the cleaners never shut the hell up, but the card system is literally the crux of my issues. all the weapons had to be nerfed into a sticky paste to justify the card system and turns the game into a Meta game, where you will be screamed at id you dont have the correct build. Hell, even if you only play with friends the deck building is so required it makes what should be an arcade like game a needlessly complicated chore.

    Screw this game

  5. Imo the biggest problem with the game was the development team. They were so disconnected with the fan base, did less than the bare minimum to connect. Clearly didnt play their game publicly (they used their own servers, which in turn caused alot of bugs to be ignored or go unnoticed). The community team werent allowed to discuss upcoming content and would only pass messages on (if you could catch them online which was rare). The live streams they did to showcase certain new content werent showcasing. This was better after seing joined but him joining TRS seemingly made less viewed content in the long run. And then towards the end there was just silence. No updates, no warnings just nothing. Bugs are still present to this day and missing cosmetics will never be in the game. They say to stay tuned for future games but this will be the first game studio which will make me be wary of getting games by them now.

  6. such an ill advised game, what were they thinking? you don't pit yourself against valve, it's never a favorable comparison. you can't eat their lunch, not with any dignity anyway

  7. I like back 4 blood better.. i want to love left 4 dead because of the mod support but idk theres something missing when i play. I was upset when they said they were dropping support and there was no chance of mod support to keep things going.

  8. L4D was basically my Highschool career. Most of my Steam Friend's list is people I met in L4D, folks I talk to nearly 15 years later. At the time it was awesome, especially with the emerging custom map scene. Some madlad recreated the entirety of Silent Hill 1. It took like 3 hours to beat, and had multiple endings. Insanity lol.

L4D2 was pretty good too, but it's probably where the downfall started. The new weapons and infected were mostly good, personally I didn't enjoy playing Advanced or Expert with Frypan warriors, especially with the friendly fire feature.

L4D had arguably a near perfect balance between infected, weapons, and how the AI director works. In a way, if you have chess there isn't a need to pour Risk, Stratego, or Warhammer figurines into the board. now someone is bringing cards to the table? Too much that nobody asked for. Don't step over your chess game to put forth checkers.

  9. defending corporations for being greedy, that’s like sucking up to the guy who whaling on you for not paying his protection fee. You people know that you can be treated better than slaves right?

  10. The truth is: TRS is just another studio that just want one only thing, make money and nothing more else. But, of course, they will always say that every produt will came from the creators of something really good and everything else. In the end, its another forgetable game with few time of life. Worst is that have somes that really try to protect that shit thing. Btw, incredible video as usual!

  11. TRS saying that the people who made left 4 dead made this is setting the bar too high for themselves and it's obvious that they failed to jump over it.

  12. I actually enjoy Back 4 Blood, I just don't think its a successor to Left 4 Dead 2 as much as it is its own zombie shooter game. I felt it had a lot of potential for lore, game mechanics, pvp, modding, etc. but Turtle Rock just straight up said no. They really need to stop living off their L4D reputation, despite how popular L4D2 is, it's from 2009 and is mainly alive due to its modding community. That's like a person in their 30s bringing up their high school honor roles, like cool, but how about something that's cool and recent to build off of, especially since their not with the studio they worked with to make L4D2.

  13. Somehow I have played this game regularly for it's entire lifecycle…I really enjoyed my time and the friends I made.

The initial grind sucked because your cards sucked. Playing after that sucked until you had either a near full deck or a good team. The end game was a bit repetitive and would have been helped a ton with a wee bit of pvp sprinkled in. When the 15 cards came at the start even the casuals could feel the full potential of the game. The speed nerfs had to happen because there were too many rounds trivialized by 1 speed runner. Cosmetics were meh and 1 year of support is gut wrenching.

  14. I played about 300 hours of b4b and had a lot of fun with it but it's like the definition of a mixed bag. To contrast I played 2700 hours of l4d2.
    The Good:
    1. REALLY deep customization system with the deck system. This feature alone made the campaign much better than l4d's ever was. After beating l4d's campaign i never touched it again, there was no reason to once you beat it on the hardest difficulty. The different builds and playstyles you could have with b4b and the really high difficulty gave it immense replay value.
    2. Much better weapon variety that l4d and the tools, gadgets and other things really allowed for some truly creative play styles.
    3. Looked and ran pretty great.
    4. The support it got in the year it had it was pretty good as far as new cleaners and campaigns. The extra stuff was often better than the original stuff.

    The bad:
    1. The game was in a state of bugginess and terrible balance for a huge portion of it's lifespand. There were some run ending bugs that were in it on day one and are still there to this day like the bug where it automatically throws your throwable weapon when you shoot your sidearm. The balancing on the harder difficulties for the first several months of launch made them more dependent on RNG than skill.
    2. The horrendously bad writing and unfunny characters. The only character who ever made me chuckle was Doc. ALL the characters ranged from bland and forgettable to downright cringe.
    3. The lack of a true vs campaign killed it for me. The PVP was terrible and l4d's vs campaign was BRILLIANT. That's where all my hours went.
    4. the fact they never put in a level progress tracker for ZWAT was insane despite people begging for it for a year.
    5. The CONSTANT accidental patching in of exploits and bugs. I had to quit playing the game for months at a time due to never being able to find a team that isn't item duping.

B4B was a mixed bag, i would wager with the stuff they learned from b4b they could probably make an incredible b4b2.

  15. Glad you commented on the Cleaners being so…off. I noticed early on that they're basically sociopathic murderhobo types, as compared to the survivors from both of the L4D games who have a wide variety of personalities.

  17. I’ve got about 55 days played on this game, and my opinion is definitely different of the majority. I quite liked the game, I never saw the ads but bought the game when it came out. It definitely reminded me of L4D/L4D2 but I enjoyed the refreshing twist of building your own deck. I won’t lie there was a lot of things to complain about in the beginning. You could only get 1 card a mission which was dumb and clunky, the Swarm PVP mode was not good. But through all those downsides I really enjoyed the gameplay. It’s very sad to see it go after just one year of dlc and updates.
