‘Dead’ Russian commander Viktor Sokolov seen on video after Ukraine claimed to have killed him

A new video was released Tuesday showing the commander of the country’s Black Sea Fleet attending a video conference — a day after Ukrainian special forces claimed it had killed him in a missile strike.

In video and photographs quietly put out by the Russian Ministry of Defense, Admiral Viktor Sokolov appears to be remotely taking part in a meeting with Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu and other top military brass.

The video was shown on Russian state television and reported on by the state-controlled news agencies TASS and Interfax, neither of which provided any information on when or where the footage depicting Sokolov was taken.

In response to the defense ministry’s purported “proof of life” video depicting Sokolov, Ukraine’s special forces said in a social media post Tuesday that it was clarifying information “regarding the destruction of the commander.”

  1. Reminds me of the story of "El cid" supposedly even if the guy was dead , he was mounted on his horse and placed in the front of his army..to terrify the ennemies)))
But there have been plenty of real cases as well, during antiquity & medieval as well as modern history when dead soldiers were leaned against the walls / parapets with weapons still in hand, to give the ennemy the illusion that they're alive..

  3. his chair is different from every other chair. He doesn't say anything, he doesn't react to anything said in any meaningful way. Might as well be old footage of him stuck onto a recent conference… The question is why though? If he is dead, why cover it up? Russia will have to appoint a new black sea fleet commander at some point, and it will become evident if he is dead or not… It could old harm Russia to lie about him being alive.

  4. The Russian MOD just released another video of Sokolov wearing what looks like summer blend sand coloured (often worn in SAR – Syrian Arab Republic) fatigues. Nobody, including himself mentions the HQ fiasco at all or comments on casualties. Odd.

  5. Видно! що адмірал Соколов не вкріслі білому, а на постільній білизні, можливо, подушка. Також є сумніви що він сидить вертикально. Заточений погляд може також означати, що зйомки відео з одного кадру та непомітний монтаж

  6. So basically USA finances Ukraine to no end to fight their war while they hide in the shadows, Putin cant really retaliate to the full extent because people will frame him as an "evil dictator" so USA/Ukraine can keep doing damage to Russia without them having the liberty to fully respond. Keep pushing Russia this wont end well for anybody.
