Day 3 Highlights | European Athletics U18 Championships | Banska Bystrica 2024

20 July 2024 – The middle distance races took centre stage in the morning of Day 3. Rising Czech prospect, 16-year old Filip Toul completed the first part of a potential distance running double, winning the men’s 1500m with a tactically astute run. There was a thrilling finish in the women’s 3000m where Katie Pye just got the better of Germany’s Julia Ehrle in the race to the line. Astrid Cecilie Berntsen of Norway took gold in the women’s 2000m steeplechase with a personal best.

It was a day of surprises in the field events. Ștefan Alexandru Ciobanu won Romania’s first gold medal of the championships, winning the men’s shot put. Italy’s Pietro Villa caused a sensation in the men’s javelin, winning gold ahead of Poland’s world U18 leader Roch Krukowski. Thomas Williams became the first ever Irish male athlete to win gold at the European Athletics U18 Championships when he won the men’s hammer. The women’s high jump went with the form book as Hungary’s Lilianna Bátori leapt to gold with 1.84m. Mathias Urbanczyk secured Belgium’s first medal of Banska Bystrica, winning gold in the men’s pole vault with a personal best 5.10m.

Reminiscent of Rome just a few weeks ago, it turned into another Super Saturday for the Italian contingent. In the women’s 200m, Elisa Valensin and her 15-year-old Italian teammate Margherita Castellani made it an Italian gold and silver. In the men’s 200m, Diego Nappi became the new champion.

The future of Polish 400m running looks in good hands, after Stanisław Strzelecki and Anastazja Kus landed a one lap double.

The overnight leader in the men’s decathlon is Portugal’s Denis Hrabar. Estonia’s European U18 leader Tristan Konso maintained his medal push and France’s Kilian Trochain can also look back on a good day’s work.

  1. Well done to Conor Kelly and Joe Burke on the bronzes, class to see irish representation in the 100, 200 & 400m men’s finals and a special congratulations to Thomas Williams on the gold, some great young hammer throwers on the rise between him and Nicola Tuthill. Shaping up to be another class championships for ireland, so nice to see such great talent coming up, the future is more than bright! 🇮🇪☘️

  2. Very good job by the 2 Italian girls, it will not be easy (the transition from youth is hard) but I think they will be the future of our female athletics. I went to check the age since the girl came second looked really young to me and I wasn't wrong: the winner girl (Valensin) is a 01-2007 but the second is even younger (Castellani is a 10-11-2008), so she competes with "older" athletes.

  3. I don't expect the announcers to pronounce all the athlete's names correctly, yet when it comes to the official English names of the participating countries, I do. While I generally like the informed and "involved" announcing style, I was shocked (as a Czech citizen who spent years in English speaking countries) to hear the announcer butchering Czechia twice at 11:01 and 11:40 (it's not "Czeczia", Sir, it really is Czechia, pronounced as in "check-ia", if that helps) during the girls' steeplechase race. Nevertheless I commend the improvement by the time the boys' 1500m took place – they got it right both at 13:26 and 14:27. Perhaps someone whose ears felt equally tortured during the steeplechase commentary intervened in the meantime. Whoever they were, I'm grateful to them. Besides that, well done to the announcers, and, of course, all the talented athletes.

  4. Congratulazioni a Diego Nappi, nuovo campione europeo under 18. Ha confermato il tempo dei campionati italiani e, ad oggi, ha il quinto tempo mondiale under 18 sui 200 metri: fenomeno!

  5. What a bad commentator sound quality . Lots of compression artefacts , lots of micro popping and plopping. VHS sound quality in the 80ths of the last century was much better.

  6. Given the likes of the diamond league and other event highlights are often just a snippet of a closing stage or a race , one must commend this channel for just comprehensive and quality highlights .
