Dave Chappelle on The Shocking Truth about Manhattan's Dark Past #viral #newyork

In this interview clip, Dave Chappelle shares a mind-blowing story about the dark history of the native American tribe that sold the island of Manhattan to the Dutch for a mere $24 in 1626. Chappelle argues that the tribe was exploited because they were not aware of the true value of their land. The conversation with Conan O’Brien sheds light on the exploitation of native Americans and raises important questions about the power dynamics of history.

  1. But Manhattan today has that much value because the white men did something productive with it, otherwise it will be just another land like we have around South America that you can own but can’t make any money or survive from it, you just pay taxes and no one want to buy from you unless business grows around and things work around

  2. None of this s^^t is true. 60 Guilders in 1624, which became $24 in early 1800s journalism. Thought to be worth $50,000 in 2000 dollars.
Manhattan derives either from "rocky island" or "Island with many hills." Though some stories have it as "place where we got drunk together."

  3. If you think owning land is strange. certain parties in the U.S. government keep trying to privatize water. This would include taxing rain water that falls on your land. Look it up…2023 W.O.T.U.S. (Waters of the United States), Forbes Breaking News, ' If A Drop Of Rain Lands On Your Property'.

  4. Not actually true, Beads in Native American society represented agreements and future payments. There were also plenty of native american groups that believed in property.

  5. Sorry but not realising that people can own land IS stupid. Perhaps they just thought it was a ridiculous and impractical amount of land to claim ownership of, but nevertheless, if you can defend it you can own it (righteously or otherwise). Why is it stupid that they did not know this? Because in all other areas of life they practiced this principle to some degree as all humans do starting with the body and working out, eventually including land already homesteaded. Thinking the rule just arbitrarily stopped there is stupid.

So my conclusion is that they probably didn't think land couldn't be owned, but just thought there's no way these guys could pull that shit off on the island of Manhattan, crazy fuckers.

  6. He's clumping native Americans together but anyway.

There's a key thing that Dave Chappelle doesn't understand. Manhattan at the time was literally worth about 25 dollars for two reasons.

One, that's what they accepted it for. And two, because it wasn't developed.

It has no high value natural resources besides land and trees. It's only after the colonists establushed a colony and began exploiting what resources were there that the tribe returned, saw how nice it was and tried to get it back.

However, Europeans have a strong understanding of Private Property.

"No, we exchanged for this. You can't just get it back just because we made it better!"

Imagine someone selling you cloth and you make a coat out of it. Then the person comes to you and asks for all the coats you made from the cloth he sold you.

It wouldn't make sense, wouldn't it? You spent the labor and suffering to make the coat, he can't complain because you made something good from his otherwise worthless cloth.

  7. This is an example of learning about and understanding points of view and cultural differences which is clearly important for social harmony. But conservative white MAGA's see no value in such – it's their way or the highway.

  10. There is a hierarchy of Cultural Materials must be understood before Cultural exchange can be understood, the fundamental factor that Separates Indians and non Indians from communicating, is that we are speaking from two entirely different perceptions of the world"

  11. The name Manhattan originated from the Munsee Lenape language term manaháhtaan (where manah- means "gather", aht means "bow", and -aan is an abstract element used to form verb stems). The Lenape word has been translated as "the place where we get bows" or "place for gathering the (wood to make) bows".
