Dashcam video shows officer nearly killed by speeding car in Fairfax County, Virginia

New video of a crash that sent two people to the hospital shows the moment an officer narrowly avoided being hit head-on by a speeding teen driver. Fairfax County Police released the video Tuesday in hopes of deterring speeders.

Dashcam footage of the close call shows a speeding driver spin out of control, and swerve into the opposite lane, nearly striking an officer who was out of his car talking to a driver he had pulled over.

Just before 12 p.m. on Monday, a patrol officer was conducting a routine traffic stop on southbound Fairfax County Parkway, prior to Braddock Road. As the officer was approaching the driver from the passenger side, another car speeding northbound crossed over the median and smashed into the same car.

The officer just barely jumps out of the way to avoid being hit as the speeding driver crashes into the pulled-over car. He then calls for backup help and begins checking both drivers for injuries.

Fairfax County Police Chief Kevin Davis said it is a miracle the officer is alive, and only sustained minor injuries. The chief said the black 2018 BMW M3 that caused the crash was driven by a 17-year-old going over 120 miles per hour.

The adult driver who had been pulled over on the traffic stop was taken to an area hospital with minor injuries. They have since been released. The teen driver and their two passengers also sustained minor injuries.

The teen driver accused in the head-on crash stayed at the scene and is now facing charges for reckless driving.

The crash comes as the police department is ramping up traffic enforcement efforts and outreach to high schools as more incidents involving teens go up. So far in 2023, there have been eight deadly crashes involving juveniles in the county.

The Fairfax County Police Department hopes parents and guardians consider using this video as an opportunity to have a conversation with teen drivers about how their driving behavior can affect the lives of others.

  1. wow! i'm thankful the corresponding official is okay… very lucky. two bmws?!?!?!?! and not just any kinds either that is crazyyy, if this isn't a sign i don't know what is. buckle up and drive safe everyone. really comes to show how fast you can lose it all in one blink. well built these cars are. this is madness. individuals like these need to know there is a certain talent and skill to maneuver such vehicles, REGARDLESS, could happen to even the most talented, therefore just don't speed, go to a designated area such as a track. I personally happen to speed like this from time to time because it's a soothing feeling behind it plus some can not drive but i know and accept the LIMITS it comes with and it goes to all cars, makes me not want to speed at all ever again.

  2. On Ford Mustangs using the “MyKey” feature, a parent can limit the top speed to as low as 65 mph and remove the ability to disable traction control. Are there other cars with this capability?

  3. Officer Ran the Wrong way. Could have gotten over Arm-Co right away. Poor training, poor reflexes.
Juvenile just needed to brake a bit before curve. could have taken that curve at 100mph. Just inexperienced. Good car.

  4. Wow excellent reaction from the police officer. He should be commended. I also noticed that it almost became a three BMW crash, the M3 that lost control narrowly missed crashing into another BMW Z4 that was passing through, but unfortunately crashed into a BMW 7 series! BMW's has proven here that they have excellent structural safety, a very strong safety steel cage, most likely if it had been a Hyundai or a Kia everyone in the car wouldn't have survived the high speed crash, and would have bursted in a ball of flames! BMW are very safe indeed.👍
