Warhammer 40,000: Darktide doesn’t have the most clear story. There’s a lot of information we got before Darktide even launched through trailers and the vox transmissions.
When the timeline is pieced together, it’s clear that Darktide has a richer story appropriate for the 40k universe, and could go in a lot of directions.

Big E in his infinite wisdom knew that the chaos forces are the biggest threat for humanity. So he gave a single chapter of Astartes the capability to prepare for it. The grey knights.
Literally everyone else is not allowed to even inform themselves about chaos. Now that Big E is sitting on his throne all day, like a Genshin Impact player, people in the Imperium are not even allowed to mention chaos. Or else the inquisition will do not so PG friendly things to you.

Morrow is a sergeant major in the steel legion. It's his job to make the FNG's life a misery. He didn't just come up to you to give you shit for his own pleasure, he gets paid to give you crap. That's said anyone who's worked in the military knows a sergeant who couldn't finish their breakfast without a cup of some grunt's pain and tears.
