Daredevil — "Don't You Understand We're All Broken?"

Moving scene from Daredevil S3:13 where Wilson Fisk aka Kingpin (Vincent D’Onofrio) expresses his concern to his bride-to-be, Vanessa Mariana (Ayelet Zurer) that he is too broken emotionally to love. Vanessa then responds with one of the most amazing lines in television: “Don’t you understand we’re all broken? The point is to find the person whose broken pieces fit with yours.”.

This scene was moving simply because of its writing and applicability — to anyone who has felt broken emotionally, this line hits home in pointing out you’re not unworthy of love. Rather, this scene teaches those who feel broken that love is not about being absolutely perfect, but in finding someone who understands you and who you commit to love more than yourself (like Kingpin had done with Vanessa). It is also helpful for people who feel broken to realize that everyone has been through difficulties, that a person they will love potentially feels broken too and that an important part of love is for you and your partner to learning each other’s difficulties and support each other through these difficulties.

The scene was also poignant in its character development. It showed how much Wilson and Vanessa loved one another, causing the viewer to sympathize with them, despite them being the villains and having been shown to do terrible things. Even though they were the villains, this scene develops their love story as one of the most believable and memorable in fiction, solidifying their place as one of the best villains in television. Such compelling villains are one of the many reasons Daredevil is one of the best series in television.
