Scary Brakes OR Airy Brakes? β Proton Impian Spongy Brake Pedal Tackled β An absolute waste of time! #proton #car #impian #waja #malaysia
So β¦ Dad has given two thumbs up to the latest buy, this Β£300 Proton Impian (or Waja in Malaysia. Hi!) BUT he did notice that the brake pedal felt a bit spongy. Could it be air in the brakes? In the ABS?
In this video we bleed the braking system with a view of trying to fix that pedal β SPOILER ALERT. We donβt (so its back to the drawing board)

what is it with Birmingham? you're not the first channel to say similar things. also Lucas brakes, theres the problem.
I often found mushy brakes to be caused by seized pads and or siezed guide pins, especially on cars that have low mileage and some vintage!
Interesting to watch this process β€
No idea on what to do next. But enjoyed the video
Loving your Waja! πAll jest aside, I learned a lot in this one. And a nice video to watch over a Sunday morning coffee too π. All the best gents!
Hello you absolute legends. There. Sorted it for you π
Great video Jon and Pete well done could the issue be with that brake servo or brake pipes but if pedal firming up when engine off itβs working correctly?? I wonder if there is an issue with the ABS maybe needing a reset
Anyway well done know you will get there in the end all the best to you all Daniel
Another great video guys, its about time topdon sent you out a scanner to do a review on hopefully it would connect to your car properly so you can do a abs pump bleed etc.
If Bruce was there he would have solved the problem ! great vid.
Playing with your Waja on Utube ? Could get you arrested!
I used to drive Impians for Humberside, I seem to remember the brakes never felt that brilliant even when the cars were relatively new.
great work boys
Brakes can feel different on every car, my wife's Ibiza are neck breakingly sharp. Nice to see dad dressed appropriately now it's getting colder.
I enjoyed this episode It's nice to see a bit of fun in it too, at least you both have changed most of the brake fluid ,so not a waste of time chaps π
Have you actually changed ALL the brake fluid, rather than just topping it up? If it's over 2 years old it will contain water which doesn't compress and will make the brakes spongy.
Brake hoses delaminating inside
I had this with a 2012 renault megane it was the abs module
John, have the rear pads been replaced? If so, after the pistons were wound' back and new pads fitted and the handbrake worked before the brake pedal pumped, you'll not get a good pedal.
Will your dads Christmas cheer improve as we get closer to Christmas ?, or is he now at 100% cheer ? Love you Pete ! ππ€ͺπ€
If one of the hoses has delaminated, the respective brake would be sticking/binding. One of the fronts looked quite dustyβ¦.. And missing handbrake return springs are no joy either. No vacuum leak in the servo feed?
You need to look at front and back brakes cylinders a full brake inspection your dad has found dodgy brake pipes my top tip recycle brake fluid through a pair of tights, some times it also helps to heat rear brake shoes up in an oven this remove any moisture that can build up in pads and shoes
Had this recently on our Fabia. It was a vacuum leak. Very hard to see with the naked eye but essentially one of the pipes had gone hard at a T joint and it was just sitting in place but not sealing. Pedal was hard with the car off but when running it would goto the floor.
My Proton needed a new master cylinder at 7 years old. Luckily, the former Proton dealer in Northampton had one.
Pads seized in the calipers is common especialy with the lack of use, that can give a dodgy feeling pedal. Also degraded flexi hoses that are expanding under pressure. If it has had a servo changed as you suspect sheck the adjujstment on the pedal and the pushrod into the master cylinder if it has any adjustment, might be miles off and youre getting a lot of extra travel.
I had a look on my Topdon Topscan and it has Impian/Waja listed within the ABS purge menu… might be worth a go with one, give me a shout if you want to try it..
With regards to not being able to purge the ABS, did you use the Volvo S40 setting? I'm guessing yes but didn't hear you say you try that one.
I watched and enjoyed to the end John, I always enjoy your Son and Dad collaboration! Think you bagged a bargain too, Β£300 for a 20k miles Waja is for nothing!
Check brake hoses for bulging under pressure.
Brake Caliper strip-down. Would be my best guess. ππ
Now thatwas an interesting video with you and your father l learnt something new l have really had many brake issues on al, the vehicles l have owned l know l have do fluid flushes on the brakes and clutch hydraulic systems on my Hilux
Power windows are easy to breakπ
Time to go further into this Pete and John as you've change the brake fluid you now need to make sure that all the pistons are returning fully in the calipers and by doing so you will send the fluid back to the master through the ABS unit and if anything seal wise is stuck from lack of use it may very well free off when the pressure goes in the opposite direction now having said that you mention that he's had a replacement brake servo whilst you're in there it may be a very good idea to check the adjustment of the pedal push rod which will of course have a bearing on the feel of the operation of the brakes good luck I shall be interested to see how you get on
