"I met Dan at a weird phase of my life. I hated my job, my parents had moved to Canada but my visa was rejected & I was recovering from a rare blood disorder which had left me with severe allergies & arthritic pain. At times I couldn’t breathe or walk for long. And as for my dating life, it was difficult for me to trust anyone. I mean, if you’re abandoned on the streets of Goa by your supposed boyfriend because they’re ‘tired’ of your sickness, you’re bound to have trust issues. But then Dan came around & my world spun on every axis. We met online a decade ago, but I didn’t expect anything. He was a Canadian boy, who came from the land that had rejected me; I wanted to know about the place. And he wanted to know about India; & just like that, we clicked! Soon, we started going out for coffee visits, grocery shoppings & small trips. And before we knew it, we were in love! And despite all my doubts, he proved to be the one as each time he stood by me during my allergic reactions & hospital visits. He'd always say, 'Your illness doesn't define you.' I started seeing myself differently. But our love wasn't just tested by my sickness, we had different passports. And a year later, he moved to Germany for work & I, to Washington. The long distance was tough. But seeing each other every few months kept us both going. Finally, a year later, he moved to Washington for a project. In those days, when I couldn't walk, he'd push me around on a wheelchair saying, 'You & I are a team.' And a few weeks later he pulled out his grandmother's ring & asked me to marry him. It's been 6 years & to see Dan dote over for the smallest things feels surreal. I once told him I was planning to write, & the next day he walked in with a printer & a 100 pages for me! But it's also not been all rosy. Over time, I've developed more issues like POTS & Lyme disease but together, we lived through it all & built this beautiful family. Today, when we're all together, laughing over silly things, my heart aches…in a good way. I never thought I'd have this life. But I do! All because a decade ago I met a man who taught me that against all odds & despite all obstacles, true love always stays!"
