D-DAY 80 – MERVILLE BATTERY | Daring attack on WW2 defences before Sword Beach Normandy invasion

On D-Day, June 6, 1944, the British 9th Parachute Battalion, commanded by Lieutenant Colonel Terence Otway, attacked the Merville Battery in Normandy neutralising the German artillery threatening Sword Beach. Despite severe obstacles and heavy casualties, Otway gathered a small force and successfully infiltrated the heavily fortified battery. They disabled the guns aimed at Sword Beach where the British troops were about to land in the early hours of the D-Day operation.
