  1. I know why they call them Booms cause I went to Queensland with my mum and dad when I was younger and dad hired a little sail boat on the Noosa river and it was kind of funšŸ¤”but yeah the boom hit dad in the forehead cause he was worried what I was doing ,poor dad he was ok though he was pretty funny and the best dad everšŸ¤—but yeah I don't really like sailing I like my bmx and my brother had a cool stand up jet ski and I started doing tricks on it and it was so much fun but then he sold itšŸ™I kind of wouldn't mind a stand up jet ski but my car isn't designed to pull a trailer and besides jetski's are expensive and I don't like the sit down skis so I will stick with my bmx and besides it's a bit like jetskiing in the way I stand on my bike and less hassle ,but yeah poor guys and there family they probably just thought they were in for an adventure.

  2. Following winds always come with the risk of an involuntary jibe. This is literally the most dangerous thing that can happen on a boat because the boom travels through a massive arc at great speed and very suddenly. Cruising boats often use a line attached to the end of the boom to prevent it from whipping back in the event of a jibe, but racing boats quite often don’t set these up so they can be more reactive when changing direction.

A boom death is so unavoidable. As someone who’s skippered many boats in my time, I can tell you that boom safety is paramount when you’re going downwind. These skippers failed to make that point effectively.
