Cuba: High prices, lines and shortages | DW Documentary

In Cuba, the socialist project begun by revolutionary hero and former president Fidel Castro is teetering on the verge of failure. The nation is sinking deeper into crisis, with many people’s daily lives marred by shortages of food, medicine and electricity.

Cuba has been subject to sanctions for decades. Despite recent attempts at reform, the country is increasingly isolated and economically dependent. A currency reform enacted in 2021 is also causing major problems, with inflation soaring and prices skyrocketing. Food is scarce, and lines in front of the few state-run stores are getting longer and longer.

Poverty is on the rise. Even the famous ingenuity of the Cuban people is reaching its limits as they try to cope with the day-to-day effects of the crisis. Images of bygone revolutionaries are fading in the streets the capital, Havana, and all over the island. Official voices continue to broadcast the state’s ideology, but ordinary people are losing hope that things will improve.

  1. Cuba is even more thriving than many European cities prior to the dictatorship of Castro. Castro put it into a halt, turned it into his liking and now it’s a shithole. Only Castro and his cohorts benefited from the so called revolution for the people. This is why Communism is the worst form of government. Read Animal Farm by George Orwell to understand how communism works. It’s more likely to result to oppression than equality that it promised.

  2. longest sanctioned country, their despair is because of the western puppet masters, thanks for nothing, let them be, not dominate, goddamn capiatlist exploitative regime are making this happening,

  3. There’s one thing common in almost all (if not all) of communist countries, the dictator and his cohorts are extremely rich while the rest of the nation (vast majority) wallow in poverty. So where’s the sense of community there?

  4. this is just lies. a few days ago UN voted on lifting sanctions on cuba. only 2 countries in the world voted to still blockade the cuban people: USA and israel, 180+ countires voted to lift the unjust sanctions. now u know whos responsible for this mess. put sanctions on germany and blockade all trade and then cubans will make a nice documentary about why germany sucks

  5. The embargo needs to be remove already. It hasn’t worked. The Trump administration tighten the embargo restrictions and yet many Cubans in Miami still support that awful man and other republicans who will definitely not do anything for the people of cuba. I am not saying that the embargo is the only problem but it has been the biggest problem since day one, which has made everything else worse. I hope that we can soon see an end to this suffering because at the end of the day is the people who suffer.

  6. It’s not because they are socialist, communist or whatsoever, it’s because of the sanctions from the evil western countries. You western countries always talk about human rights, human rights my-ass, necessity is really in need for these people. I am not communist I am from capitalist country, am I saying it right? Capitalist?

  7. What a mess. Cuba would be a leading first world nation by now, eligible for US Statehood if it wanted. JFK blinked – and I cannot blame him for doing so – and Cuba got killed, along with JFK.

  8. I wonder if this DW news crew were allowed to travel around other than Havana? The critiques by those academics are almost subversive.

DW reports some engrossing documentaries on stories the American MSM overlook. One has to give props to that one Cuban's ingenuity in keeping his pink Chevy looking great and running without having any car parts stores in Cuba.

People complain in general but avoid criticizing the government. There must be some Cubans who are living well while the vast majority live in squalor. I bet anyone of the Castro family aren't wanting for nothing.

I don't think things were much better under the Bautista dictatorship from what I've learned. The country seems so surreal and compared to North Korea Cubans "live" better as you can see the younger generation wear some designer named clothes. You won't see any decadent Western influence there.

  9. I'm reading the comments section, and most are criticizing the Cuban government but not the United States for the embargo. There's only so much you can blame on the Cuban government. When the pandemic was at its worst, it was the United States that didn't allow other countries to provide medical aid, and the situation that is shown in this documentary is because of that fact. Here is a lesson: stop assuming and ask why and find out the reason. Nothing is as black and white as what the majority in this comment section is concluding,

  10. ¡Ay!
    Fonsi, DY
Oh, oh no, oh no (oh)
    Hey yeah
    Diridiri, dirididi Daddy
    Go!

    Despacito
    Quiero respirar tu cuello despacito
    Despacito
    Quiero desnudarte a besos despacito
    (Sube, sube) Oh

    Quiero ver bailar tu pelo
Quiero ser tu ritmo (uh oh, uh oh)
Que le enseñes a mi boca (uh oh, uh oh)
Tus lugares favoritos (favoritos, favoritos baby)

Quiero, quiero, quiero ver cuánto amor a ti te cabe
Yo no tengo prisa, yo me quiero dar el viaje
    Empezamo' lento, después salvaje

    Pasito a pasito, suave suavecito
Nos vamos pegando poquito a poquito
Cuando tú me besas con esa destreza
Veo que eres malicia con delicadeza
    Pasito a pasito, suave suavecito

    Despacito (yeh, yo)
Quiero respirar tu cuello despacito (yo)
    Despacito
Quiero desnudarte a besos despacito (yeh)
    (Sube, sube) Oh

    Quiero ver bailar tu pelo
Quiero ser tu ritmo (uh oh, uh oh)
Que le enseñes a mi boca (uh oh, uh oh)
Tus lugares favoritos (favoritos, favoritos baby)
Déjame sobrepasar tus zonas de peligro (uh oh, uh oh)
Hasta provocar tus gritos (uh oh, uh oh)
    Y que olvides tu apellido

    Despacito

Pasito a pasito, suave suavecito (hey yeah, yeah)
Nos vamos pegando, poquito a poquito (oh no)
Que le enseñes a mi boca (uh oh, uh oh)
Tus lugares favoritos (favoritos, favoritos baby)
    Pasito a pasito, suave suavecito
Nos vamos pegando, poquito a poquito
Hasta provocar tus gritos (eh-oh) (Fonsi)
Y que olvides tu apellido (DY)
    Despacito
