Here is the CSL Tadoussac arriving in Superior, Wisconsin early on the evening of June 21, 2023. She was previously at anchor waiting for the departure of her fleet mate Spruceglen so she could load taconite (iron ore) pellets at the Burlington Northern 5 dock. Once loaded, she was scheduled to deliver her cargo to Nanticoke, Ontario. The Tadoussac has made this Superior to Nanticoke run several times during the 2023 season… to the degree that this may actually be her main run at the current time, until other demands pull her onto a different run.
For the start of this video, I repeated the salute exchange between the Spruceglen and the Tadoussac that ended the departure video of the Spruceglen. It seemed worth repeating as that video didn’t get a lot of views and many who did watch it didn’t stay around until the end. (If you did watch it until the end, then you have my sincere gratitude!) If you missed that video, which contained lots of tugboat action, you can view it here: https://youtu.be/QEJd38V-pZY
I wasn’t expecting any further salutes out of the Tadoussac, as she typically doesn’t salute to the boat watchers in Superior… or at least for this particular boat watcher. But the Tadoussac did surprise us with a salute while passing by. I suspect the salute might have been meant for the young ladies who had also gathered on the pier, not the seasoned boat nerd with a camera! But that’s fine with me… a salute captured on camera is a salute I can share it with you on YouTube.
The 730-foot CSL Tadoussac was launched in 1969 and is powered by a single 6-cylinder 9,600 b.h.p. Sulzer model 6RND76 diesel engine. She was the last laker built for Canada Steamship Lines with the classic forward-mounted pilot house and is one of only two classic-style lakers still sailing for CSL today (with the other being the Frontenac). In the year 2000, the Tadoussac’s center section was rebuilt and widened, along with a rebuild of her self-unloading system. This rebuild gave her a “bulge” in the hull close to the waterline. The rebuilt unloading system featured a covered single tunnel belt, remotely operated gates, and a comprehensive dust suppression system. She currently has a the capacity to haul 30,051 tons of ore at a mid-summer draft of 28 feet 3 inches.

CSL Tadoussac…A beautiful June afternoon as two fleetmates exchange salutes…Smooth sailing as the Tadoussac pushes in on crystal blue waters….then a salute and she slides on by…A beautiful capture of the June sun as it beams down and reflects on the water like sparkling gemstones! And then a wonderful shot down the pier on this lazy Summer afternoon. You have brought another beautiful video of life on the Lake at Superior! From sunbeams to ships it was an awesome scene. Thanks!
Can't think of a finer reason for a salute than to entertain some young ladies! 8^) Liked the video! Cheers.
Interesting how the pilot house on the lakers built in the sixties became more boxy. Maybe related to construction costs? Still, the Tadoussac has an air of working elegance about her. Oh, and are both of Tadoussac's funnels functional, or is one a dummy? I forget.😊
Giggles from the girls was fun! Captains salute got them excited!
The whole episode was just perfect
oh how many evenings young women have waited at the harbor for their men to return to them… everything about this video is such a delight! Huge heavy haulers gliding and sliding on through, such majesty and grace ~ we are all better for seeing through you eyes~ and I really love it that you don't narrate all the way through. Thank You!
The girls felt special. What a great worming ship!
Watching the passage of these huge vessels is both awe inspiring and mesmerizing. I can understand your passion and deduction for recording them…… and I very much appreciate that you share your efforts and with us who will never have the opportunity to see one of these beauties in person. Though the Tadoussac is a pretty worn down looking Lady that needs some fresh make-up. So now you know the trick for getting Salutes from the passing ships….. have a few young ladies join your during your recording sessions.
They might want to be careful loading her or they might suddenly have two freighters in the loading dock. She looks like she might give birth at any minute.
I can’t believe folks don’t watch to the end! Thanks for including the horn salute between the two boats.
Beautiful.
