Crowds sing Fairytale of New York during Shane MacGowan's funeral procession

Crowds of people have lined the streets of Dublin to pay tribute to The Pogues singer Shane MacGowan ahead of his funeral in County Tipperary.

Musicians played some of his best known songs and fans sang along as the horse-drawn carriage bearing his coffin made its way through the city.

The 65-year-old singer-songwriter had been unwell for some time before his death last week.

The procession ended shortly before midday.

  1. Jesus. Why does alcoholism and addiction take some of the best people too soon? I know he wasn’t a youngster anymore. But last year I lost the best friend who introduced me to this song as my first time hearing of The Pogues, in college naturally lol, and it’s of course lots of people’s favorite. This just feels heartbreaking. The crowd singing this song broke me. I’m still glad he was alive and they made the music they did. ❤️💔❤️
