Couple transforms oil tank into panoramic home on tiny fjord Island

In the tiny Scandinavian island of Skrova north of the Arctic Circle, Martin Otterbeck and Agnete Brun bought an old, rusty oil tank that once held 200,000 liters (53,000 gallons) of diesel and transformed it into a modern home with panoramic 360-degree views of the surrounding Norwegian fjord.

When Martin asked about the abandoned tank’s cost, the owner told him it was 15,000 Norwegian Krone, or 1,389 USD. So Martin bought it and set out to build his dream remote home, thanks to his building experience and willingness to improvise. 👉 Watch the moment at 1:10

As a trained carpenter, Martin did all the work himself, drawing on his nautical experience to craft custom built-ins that maximize space within the tank’s curved walls.

Walking through Skrova with Martin, we visited a neighbor building an annex to his home, which, like Martin’s own home, was inspired by boats; in this case, he created an” upside-down boat” design for a monolithic roof.

  1. This was simply wonderful. He reminds me so much of a fellow named George that I met at his small inn down in Pescadero, Baja California. He was kind, talkative and resourceful and loved to bring out the photo album of the home he built out of a tall wooden water tower in Seal Beach, California. He had a great life in his groovy bachelor pad before selling it and moving to Mexico. Although George has passed, his water tower house in California and his lovely inn in Baja still remain.

  2. Everything’s gorgeous except that horrible dark side of the Scandinavian countries and Japan. Their obsession with whale hunting. It’s not cultural, it’s pure free nonsense violence.
I hate them for that and I boycott those countries.
    Of course I’m vegan.

  4. great going Kirsten! Can you please clue me in to another program, that I cannot find now, about homes in the extrme climates of Russia, built as cylinders but horizontally oriented. There seems to have been scientific research as well as standardized factory production of such homes for miners, military personnel, etc. Would be most grateful for some details or contact information. Thank you.
