Could Humanity Survive a Nuclear Winter?

The possibility of total annihilation through a nuclear war has been in the cultural zeitgeist since the start of the Cold War. Just the thought alone might be enough to induce nightmares in the masses, but the possibility has not been entirely off the table since then. Yes, the world’s superpowers have cooled down in the last couple of decades, but whenever there is political tension involving these superpowers, the topic seems to resurface.

It is true that nuclear bombs were used on populated cities at the end of World War 2. But this came at a time when the United States was the only nation to yield such a destructive weapon, making Axis powers unable to retaliate.

The potential for harm is significantly higher now when we factor in the fact that there are nearly 12,705 nuclear warheads in the world. And it is theorized that a nuclear war can have a cooling effect on Earth because of the dust and smoke a catastrophic event of this magnitude would create. In this episode of Imagine That, we dive deep into the possibility of a Nuclear Winter and if humanity would survive this event or not.

  1. Yeah. Put some bananas in the exhaust hose … and that's it for the mighty tank. Tanks are so old school. Modern warfare is sth completely different.

  2. The evidence is not particularly strong nuclear weapons would cause a nuclear winter. A volcano can put up massively more material into the atmosphere than nukes can, and cities are designed today not to burn so much. Concrete and steel don't burn.

  3. An objective look points to the reality question of when. A nuclear war is inevitable given the ongoing rising trend of authoritarianism and the erosion of democracies through continuous weakening in the separation of powers and the undermining of rule-of-law across the world. Smart and able people are unfortunately switching to the private sector increasingly leaving politics to the unconsciously incompetent. Nevertheless given how hardy life can be, human kind will still survive along with a few other forms of life in a small way and restart civilisation on earth.

  4. If you're reading this, it's okay to consider this, morally reprehensible to actually contemplate. There is no situation with this on the table that is worth betting your life on.

  5. Is it possible to do a survival analysis in nuclear winter?
Like the engineering needed to live in an underground bunker, how to generate power, air filtration, sanitation, water recycling, and then if there's power, how to generate food in underground hydroponics etc etc?
Is it possible to build underground networks like ant homes?

  6. The Russian and Chinese governments have provided underground bunkers for their citizens in case of a nuclear attack.

The U.S. Government (Which spends more money than all Governments combined) has only provided bunkers for Itself.

They hate you and are trying to get you killed.

The next time someone tells you the Chinese government doesn't care for their citizens, please tell them the truth. It is America that doesn't care for its citizens.

  7. Wonderfull thoughtful unrushed narration.
No one should be concerned about trying to survive, they should be thinking about ways to end their lives quickly and painlessly if they are unfortunate enough to survive the initial blasts.

  8. We're long overdue for another international war of global proportions. The last global war ended almost 100 years ago, and as everyone may well be aware, history LITERALLY repeats itself. Good luck everyone!

  9. Why are they showing nuclear war started from India Pakistan border 🤷
Both countries already fought the 1999 war and many other major conflicts without using any nuclear weapons.
India even has no first use policy. I don't know about Pakistan but India surely has no interest in war.
We must use nuclear technology for energy.
