  1. Have you thought of doing the Des Moines class cruisers? they had/have 8 in automatic main guns, so they could do better at long range defense against missiles, and they have the 5in and 3 in antiair guns. Food for thought!

  2. "Can a SLAVA kill a battlegroup?"

    If they're within a 10 mile circle… YES.

Because the Slavas can carry a 2MT warhead!

lol. one detonation would annihilate the entire fleet lol.

But that wouldn't be a very interesting video then would it?

  3. Considering these WW2 ships were designed to do broadside bombardment sending the headlong at the enemy you took away most of their AA defenses. The AA batteries on the Yamato alone should have been enough to knock down many of those missiles.

  4. Wow…. These guys think a battleship is about as tough as an aircraft carrier? Have they never read a history book? Aircraft carriers are fragile and are supposed to stay away from the enemy while the battleships are supposed to engage in direct combat and tank the damage. A 2000lb bomb would not sink a battleship or even heavily damage it, the WW2 German Fritz X bomb was a 3460lb bomb and many ships were hit but few were sunk. Tirpitz was bombed by the RAF for months and refused to sink until they brought 12,000lb tallboy bombs and even with those Tirpitz took 5 tallboys before it sank. So, using that math for your damage model it should take 30 hits by 2000lb bombs before a battleship is in danger of sinking and I don't even think that would do it because modern bombs do not have armor piercing caps. Also, keep in mind that battleship shells in WW2 weighed 2000lbs or more and battleships ate many of them without sinking, for instance Bismarck took over 400 shell hits before it was scuttled by its crew so your model should reflect the historical ships accurately instead of modeling them like a modern unarmored carrier. A modern carrier is made of butter, a WW2 battleship is made of 20 inches of armor plate.

  5. It just gets worse the more I listen, they are still going on about a 2000lb supersonic missile sinking a battleship with one hit. In case you didn't know, a 16" battleship shell weighed 2700lbs, it was supersonic, it had an armor piercing cap, and battleships were designed to be armored against their own guns which means that they are designed specifically to shrug off the wimpy little 2000lb non armor piercing missile. The missile is loaded with HE and the battle of Jutland in 1916 showed that HE had little effect on armor plate, nice dramatic fireballs but no damage except some scorched paint and the modern missiles will do the same, they will break up on contact with the armor and will not penetrate the ship.

  6. And after watching that first salvo of missiles hit, I highly recommend you read some naval history books before doing another of these simulations. The first ones didn't work the way you wanted them to so you just turned down the battleships armor so your missiles would damage them more when in reality, no ship borne weapon in service today except a torpedo would sink a WW2 battleship simply because modern weapons are not designed to pierce armor since no country has built an armored ship in 75 years. Even the atomic bomb tests at operation crossroads showed that nuking a fleet had little effect and if a nuke is not going to sink a battleship, what makes you think a missile will? Letting air in the top of a ship will not sink it, you have to let water in the bottom and a missile will not get thru a battleships armor to accomplish that. Also, battleships were subdivided, many ships had their bows or sterns blown off and holes below the waterline and sailed home because they have watertight bulkheads everywhere.

  7. My brain hurts due to your ignorance. A 500lb payload missile is pathetic and is 1/4 the weight of most battleship shells. Also, the Roma was sunk by the Germans, she was hit by 2 Fritz X bombs and suffered a magazine detonation. Fritz X weighs 3460lbs and has an armor piercing cap which is how it got to the magazines which your 500lb missile could never do because it does not have an armor piercing cap.

  8. The Ukraine could love a time machine to have to get even a decade old fleet to deploy against the Russians so why not WWII battleships could do the trick in a narrow sea strait like the one around Crimea. Never mind , not against Russian rain of Missiles, nothing but equal rate of fire can do the trick.

  9. I think you modeled the armor of battleships wrong. They are nothing like paper work air craft carriers. It took 400 planes, 8 torpedo strikes and 10 bomb hits to sink Yamato in Ten-Go operation. Ok, Yamato was one of the strongest but seriously I don't think 4 missile strikes would sink any battle ship unless they were very lucky ones.

  10. Please please please ….now that the Iowas are refit, can we please revisit US fleet vs Russian Fleet? I'm dying to know to know what difference it would make to add a refit Iowa IN THE REAR OF THE US FLEET.

  12. In the United States the United States still has access to battleships that it can reactivate at any given time most of the Iowa battleships that are now museums the contracts with the US Navy states that in a time of war or need they can take those ships back and re-enter them into service and yes even the USS Texas could be reinstated in the service if it be necessary that is the agreement that all floating museum battleships have with the United States Navy to get the ship

  13. Those ASMs are HE vs AP. They would do massive damage to everything outside a BB's armored citadel, but they would absolutely destroy a CA or CB. Also since they come in low, the would be hitting the thick belt armor. WW2 BBs were designed to take damage from their own guns. The Iowa-class BBs fired super heavy 16" shells that weighed 2700 lbm with a muzzle velocity of 2690 ft/sec (around Mach 2.4…supersonic speeds). Aside from the HE, the kinetic energy of the ASMs will be over double that of the 16" shells (~1035MJ vs ~411MJ using a P-700), but the energy on impact would be spread over a much larger surface area when compared to an AP shell.

  14. Doesn't Russia only have 1 aircraft carrier? which has been in drydock or such for the last few years after an "accidental fire" caused a bunch off damage? Seem like those "accidental fires" seem to happen an awful lot on Russian ships, especially recently 😛

  15. Yeah, Im not sure that 2x 2000lb Bomb would take out an Iowa… A top down attack with a bomb that penetrated would do substantial damage but the Iowa was designed to be resilient to plunging fire from 16-18" Naval guns … the AP ability, energy and explosive effect of which a VASTLY higher then an air dropped bomb.
A Japanese 18.1" Type 91 AP shells weigh in at 3220 lb and would be traveling at over 1200mph on impact vs 2k lb. Air dropped bomb at a terminal velocity of 500-600mph max).
USS Missouri receive a direct hit to her side below the main deck from a Kamikaze in April 1945 and received almost no damage. A subsonic cruise missile striking the side of an Iowa would have similarly limited effect.

  16. So the reason Dunkerque had all her heavy guns forward is that she was built as a direct counter to the Deutschland class pocket battleships. They wouldnt need a rear turret since they would be chasing the German raider.
