There is an item in the game called "Battle Reader" which allows you to see the exact potential of a coromon in battle without having to catch it.

If you're hunting for Perfects, you might want to use a Potent Scent. You can get one from an NPC in the Soggy Swamp by giving them certain Fruit and Shrooms as listed in the Scent Recipe Book. You'll need to grow the Fruit yourself while the Shrooms can of course be picked in the area.
There's an NPC somewhere who can reset the potential points on your Coromon for you to reassign them.
