Contemplating Amida’s Attributes (Busshin-kan), from the Contemplation Sutra

Busshin Kanmon 仏身観文 (or simply Busshin-kan; verse on the visualization of Amida Buddha’s physical Attributes) also known as Shinjin Ganmon (verse on the visualization of the true body) comes from the Amitayus Contemplation Sutra and is commonly recited in Jodo Shu.

This passage is a teaching by Shakyamuni to Vaidehi on the practice of buddhanusmrti (nianfo, nembutsu), which is said to lead to birth in the pure land of bliss. It is the “nineteenth visualization” taught in the sutra, and focuses on the Buddha’s cosmic body which includes all Buddhas, and is not separate from Buddha’s mind. It also teaches a simpler method in which one begins by contemplating one of Buddha’s “signs”, the ūrṇākośa (curled white hair, shiny spiral tuft between his eyebrows).

The verses were adapted by me, I based myself on the English translation that is found in Jodo Shu’s English Complete daily prayer (otsutome) book, which can be found here: https://english.jodoshuna.org/prayer/

Text:

When these perceptions are attained,
You should visualize:
Amitayus’ form, bright in mind,
Shining in your mind’s eyes.

Ananda, this Buddha’s so bright,
He’s a glory whose sight,
Is like the hundred million golds,
That heaven’s river holds.

His height sixty trillion a mile,
As vast as ganges’ sands.
His hair tuft, snowy white in style,
Curling rightward it stands.

Tween his brows, like five Merus’ stride.
The Buddha’s blue white eyes,
Are distinct and deep. They’re as wide,
As the great ocean tides.

Buddha’s aura expanse is wide,
As thousands of billions,
Of myriad worlds. And inside
His sphere, many millions,

Of Manifestation Buddhas,
As countless as the sands,
Each manifests bodhisattvas,
in many countless bands.

Amitayus, a confluence
Of Eighty-four thousand marks.
In each, there is an occurrence,
Of as many minor marks.

Eighty-four thousand rays they have.
Each one shines ten directions wide,
In all realms the rays brightly wave,
To always be at beings’ side.

They never leave those who proclaim
The Buddha’s sacred Name,
His light, and marks, none can explain,
Nor his transformations claim.

Through meditation deep and true,
You’ll see them in your mind’s view.
The ten direction Buddhas’ glow,
The Samadhi of Nianfo.

With all Buddha bodies in sight,
This is a vision true.
Envisioning his body right,
You’ll have Buddha’s mind in view.

The Buddha’s mind is boundless care,
Embracing all as one.
Those who this path of love do share,
Go beyond body form, they’re done.

With the Buddhas they’ll be born,
And realize non-arising.
Thus, wise ones turn their minds to
see Buddha’s Measureless being.

To see Buddha of Life so vast,
Start with a single sign.
First, see the white hair curling fast
Between his brow, divine.

Until it’s seen brilliant and clear.
When you see the tuft ‘tween his eyes,
Eighty-four thousand marks appear.
Effortlessly they’ll arise.

As you see Life Buddha’s sight,
You’ll see in ten directions near,
Infinite Buddhas will alight,
And this image will be clear.

With Buddhas there before your mind,
Your future bodhi they’ll proclaim.
In this “ninth vision,” you’ll find,
All Buddha marks your mind will gain.

This method is the right way,
The other ways are irregular.
