I forwarded to the end. Good content. Westerners fixing up cheap Japanese houses is big now on YouTube.
The key to success when living abroad is changing your perspective. You can’t view life in another culture through the lens of small town BC. Comparing the attitudes of people in Tokyo or Kyoto to the people of Vancouver Island is apples and oranges. It would be more equitable to compare them to NYC or Toronto or small town Japan to small town Canada. To say that Japanese people as a whole are not friendly because of your experience in Tokyo is unfair and akin to saying Canadians are unfriendly based on a limited experience in dt Montreal. To your point though, Japan certainly is not for everyone. It’s good that you were able to realize that before moving all the way over.
Yup like it or not culture shock is a real thing. There's a million tiny ways youve adapted to Canada and being a Canadian. Even for me to move to the US would be a slight culture shock.
I think the criteria of a station, employment, and grocery makes sense.
My black teenage son wants to live there for a few years. Learning Japanese. Can he "fit in"? Thoughts?
a lot of the GP edits has been altered on my system or uninstalled based on other previous alterations created through OVO shuttup or CTT's tweaks … GREAT SUMMERY VID wrt your referenced ULTIMATE VID (not yet seen) … MUFFIN! CHEERS
Good video. I lived in Japan a long time. I also feel pretty ambivalent about the foreigners who have stayed long term, note they tend to be unhappy.
I think there are a few reasons: 1) in the English speaking community they tend to be all doing the same job so, instead of having a real community, they are all competing with one another, 2) many have trouble back home e.g. family problems or loans they are trying to run away from and they end up wasting their lives in Japan, and 3) Japan itself puts pressure on people to be something they are not e.g. always hiding their feelings so as to be more professional. Over time, this really wears on a person: the more friends one gains by being a phony, the more self-hating one becomes. Also the monotony and predictability of Japan can become annoying or stifling. And I sense a negativity or pessimism in the air in Japan and it is quite contagious.
I am sure there are other reasons, such as those already mentioned, but I just wanted to add a few I hadn't seen discussed.
But the bubble index said Tokyo is a bubble, but Toronto is not!
