The hit Zooey Deschanel sitcom New Girl is often interested in money, but these interactions with the financial very commonly seem a little suspect. This video is my second investigation into the weirdness of New Girl’s economics, and exploring the long shadows that the late capitalist hegemony casts on even the most innocuous of media properties.
Please note, I’m not saying ‘New Girl Bad’ – watch the last section of my video for an explanation of what I mean!

New Girl: Jess, a middle-school teacher, moves into an apartment with three men after she finds her boyfriend with another woman and breaks up with him. Produced in Los Angeles as a single-camera comedy, New Girl is an ensemble show aimed at a general audience. Most episodes are anchored around Jess, who, according to series creator Meriwether, would have played a side character on other shows. The show’s first marketing push was on Zooey Deschanel and the promotional tagline “Simply Adorkable”. The producers rejected early criticism of Jess’s girlishness, insisting that Jess was not meant to be emblematic of all women. Instead, they aimed to portray realistic, emotionally driven characters and to approach the show from that angle rather than simply firing off punchlines.
In Season 4, Episode 14, ‘Swuit’, Jess helps Schmidt and Nick pitch their new business venture to entrepreneur Lori Greiner. Meanwhile, Winston and Coach decide they will invest in Cece’s future. When the prototype for their new business venture doesn’t turn out as planned, Jess helps Schmidt and Nick brainstorm a new idea to pitch to famed QVC entrepreneur Lori Greiner.

I've recently tried new girl, I'm like 20+ episodes in and the plot is good and the characters are funny but I just despise Jess, she just makes drama
Worth the wait
A masterpiece, more brilliant work from pog
Amazing video, very interesting topic, all and all solid quality work
Cool video
Leftists say we live in a late stage capitalism world i say we live an a semi socialism world but at least we laugh at the same jokes so there's that
Cece best character. Don’t settle for substitutes, Swettle for swubstiswuits.
A humble suggestion kindly do give ur thoughts on Cobra Kai. Its basically a sequel to the 80s Karate Kid franchise. But the show is made in such a way that you don't need to watch the movies in order to understand it.
In my opinion it's a great show, and no hate towards anyone/any franchise, it feels like what the Star Wars sequels should've been like. As Cobra Kai perfectly balances and blends both old as well as new, along with nostalgia and fan service.
I would highly recommend you to check it out if you haven't already.
Interesting video, as much as I really like Winston and his friendship with Cece(not such a Coach fan), I did feel there was something a little odd and uncomfy about how they viewed and treated Cece in this ep even if they didn't mean her any harm. In fact, Cece's my absolute fave character from the show (Jess is way up there as one of my alltime faves too though) and I do feel she deserved better in terms of how she was treated and spoken about by the guys (including Schmidt) in the earlier seasons and that she deserved more autonomy, agency and respect.
Such a great video and definitely worth the wait. I'm so bad for watching shows passively and not actively engaging and critiquing them. This series has given me a new perspective on one of my favourite comedies. Not a a bad perspective, just new. Cheers!
This video is so problematic
Love the phrase “late capitalist orthodoxy.” And I loved this. This show really doesn’t question the status quo when it comes to financial matters. It is mostly jokes—not that I don’t love New Girl, but they continue to unquestionably promote the American Dream while claiming to relate to the average middle-class millennial.
Currently on s3 for the second time. What a great feel good fun show. Nick passing out on prince episode is all time.
epic take, i am scared for the environmental state of the earth from the capitalism devil
Classic Winston and coach mess around.
The main problem with the Art History teacher joke is that it IS 100% true. Most people in academia (I say this as an academic myself) are not happy with their lives, or better said, are not happy with how much they earn. They do teach and research, and they generally love their jobs, but they are the first ones (especially in Humanities) to tell you NOT to pursue your dreams, but to pursue money instead. At least, when we have private conversations; I do not know what they tell students
Great vid. I belive it was the writers intention, to raise awareness for parents "investing" in the children's education, and the high price of education that makes people feel bad for learning subjects they love but are not profitable. I guess it was a smart show in hindsight, wrapping the messages with jokes.
Given how cackhanded the show is I don't it would benefit from spelling out the moral that you shouldn't treat a friend as an investment. Also don't agree with the insinuation that being subject quantification is 'dehumanizing' or that there was a time in the past before 'late capitalism' (wishful thinking) where people weren't subject instrumental relationships.
