Commercial ship with a fitted sail is trialled in the UK to reduce carbon emissions

A retractable, rigid sail is being piloted for the first time in a bid to reduce fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions in commercial shipping.

Smart Green Shipping’s FastRig system will be trialled with the Nuclear Transport Solutions vessel, β€œThe Pacific Grebe” on a trip from Barrow to Southampton.

The collaboration is part of a wider focus to reduce emissions from the maritime sector, which accounts for around 3% of global CO2 emissions.

  1. Each ship should be fitted for the ability to tow another stranded ship in a short chain. There's always some pirate who will strike a sail and strand a boat. Each ship has got to have either backup or the ability to receive aid… (just an idea -> what if the backup could include carbon-fiber sails with flex-solar..? )

  2. A Japanese company trialled this 40 years ago, a German company 20 years ago.

I read about it in a science magazine in 2005. if they did their homework they would know about this.

  3. I have an idea! How about we all go back to living in hovels and burning peat for fuel? Has anyone done a study on the effects of an entire nation burning peat for heat and cooking? We can leave the cars at the door too and go back to riding horses if we can afford them. One question though, will the current government complain about subsidizing the price of peat to our pensioners, or is peat cheaper than gas?

  4. If it could save 10%! Does that mean in reality 4 or 5% ? Amazing how these news reports are done with so little info about the actual details, they would already have a good idea from the model testing…….
