After watching this one over, I have some critiques for myself. I came out to a good applause and reception, but I was too focused on what the host had been saying just prior, which had made me uncomfortable for her sake. It would have been much better to shake her hand and quietly say, “are you okay,” rather than start my performance by offering her a hug. Cringe.
I started doing too much self-aware banter, and addressing specific people in the audience about their mental or emotional state didn’t help. It’s a show, not group therapy.
Altogether, I’m surprised at how many positives there were to this set, knowing how poorly I felt about it at the time. There were even a few moments of genuine creativity and writing on stage that happened in the moment. I’ve been putting off reviewing it for months because I didn’t want to face it, but while it wasn’t the tour de force I wanted it to be, it wasn’t completely horrible. So things worked out.
