On December 29, 2024, a monumental event unfolded in Voronezh, Russia, as the Il-96-400T heavy cargo aircraft (RA-96101) roared back to life after more than a decade of dormancy. This historic flight marked a pivotal moment in Russian aviation, symbolizing resilience and innovation amid shifting global dynamics. Once considered a relic of the past, this massive cargo aircraft has been meticulously restored to serve a new purpose in the Red Wings fleet via its subsidiary, Sky Gates Airlines.
Originally built in 2009 by the Voronezh Aircraft Production Association (VASO), the Il-96-400T had faced years of uncertainty following the collapse of its original operator, Polet Airlines, in 2013. After spending over a decade in storage, this engineering marvel has now been revived, echoing the successful return of its sister aircraft, RA-96103, in late 2023. Powered by four PS-90A1 engines and boasting a maximum takeoff weight of 270 tons, the Il-96-400T is a testament to Russian craftsmanship and determination.
However, this test flight was not without intrigue. Reports suggest that the crew encountered electronic warfare interference at an altitude of 31,000 feet, just 92 kilometers from Ulyanovsk airport. Erroneous navigation readings forced the crew to make a safe return to Voronezh, adding a layer of drama to this historic event.
The Il-96-400T’s story is one of reinvention. Initially conceived as an “import substitution” project, it evolved from the Il-96T, which featured U.S.-made engines and avionics. With Western components replaced by Russian-made systems, the Il-96-400T represents a strategic pivot towards domestic solutions amidst geopolitical tensions and sanctions.
This revival comes at a critical time for Russian aviation, particularly in the cargo sector. With Sky Gates Airlines set to integrate this aircraft into its operations, the Il-96-400T is poised to fill the void left by the absence of foreign-made aircraft grounded by international sanctions. It also signals a potential shift in the industry as older platforms find new life in modern contexts.
The story of RA-96101 is more than just an engineering achievement—it’s a narrative of overcoming adversity, preserving legacy, and pushing forward in the face of challenges. As this aircraft begins its second chapter, it stands as a symbol of ingenuity and determination, capturing the attention of aviation enthusiasts and industry experts worldwide.

So, it has the same 3 crews operational setup too as the other il 96-s? Isn't that not very good for operational costs?

Not sure why this aircraft was not bought by any cargo or courier company in Russia.
Man this aircraft looks so good. Can't wait to see this with the PD-35 engine
They need only a very limited number of these aircrafts, hence production is likely to be on the lower side
