yeah i got turned off from the characters, they look so odd. 3 houses was so good in every aspect. the story just grabs you and doesn't let go
Characters in Fire Emblem games, even 3 Houses, only get interesting like 5 hours in minimum. This is par for the course. You kinda jumped the gun here.
I can see the writing isn't particularly great (so far as we've seen here and not the rest of the game); but I wonder how much of the frustration would be alleviated by the more natural Japanese VO?

Kinda odd and bugs me how the music goes light and playful when moving characters. Then when they move it goes all epic battle mode. In and out throws me off and seems like such a strange choice

It's clear he wasn't enjoying it, his only FE is three houses and most people in his position feel the same, this is not three houses, writing is much worse and everything else combat related is much better, if he just can't stand the story it is what it is.
This game is an homage to the FE saga, trying to put together 30 years and 16+ games including fire emblem heroes mobile game and aiming to please both old and new fans alike, hence the weird mix.
TLDR this game is in broad terms, a lot more enjoyable for a long term fan of the series that can enjoy all the good and improved ignoring the bad.
And the parent dies in the prologue as is tradition sigh so predictable. I'm not surprised Cohh isn't into this game since I'm not into it either. Oh well, here's hoping the next FE game will be better from a story standpoint.
It seems no FE can compare to the first game I played. Blazing Blade was great.

I'm sad he didn't give this game a real college try as he likes to say. I mean he didn't even get to the Somniel or meet most of the characters. I think he forgot how Three Houses too had it's cringey moments. You can tell he already let all the reviews get to him before he even played it. A game this big deserves more than just two hours for a proper try. This sucks. I'm actually enjoying the game and was hoping to watch Cohh alongside my playthrough like I did with Three houses :/

Okay, I rarely write as long as this, but here we go:
Honestly, I am very disappointed with you, Cohh. You started this game with so much hate already, which really influences your judgement to this game. If you had this kind of attitude, I swear to God you'll never finish Xenoblade 2, Persona 5, or even 3 Houses in the first place. Even XC2 and P5 you cringed in the first few hours, but you endured it, and grew to loving it.
Why do I know? I've became a fan of you since that XC2 and P5 playthroughs. You cringed first, then loved it. And last month literally I've just watched your Blue Lions playthrough. You said "I was told Fire Emblem is really slow…" then you endured it until the time skip. You didn't enjoy the story until Dimitri turns dark and edgy. You GREW to love it as time passes. I remember you said, "Ah.. when the dialogues/cutscenes end I want to start next battle already!" It indicates you didn't initially enjoy the story, but the COMBAT/MECHANICS.
But in this game you just jump to the conclusion already. Comparing the stories without checking the other features/mechanics. I know, and I admit, the story and dialogues are far below than 3 Houses, but literally everything else is far better in this game. In Engage, there is no weapon breaking/durability, which is pain in the ass back in 3 Houses. But you didn't know, cause you just hate it from the beginning. You didn't bother to learn it. Also you didn't know there's Backup unit who will join the battle of another unit bcs you didn't bother to learn it. Then there's throwing dagger with poison now, unlike 3 Houses.
Oh and don't get me started on customization. This is MARGINALLY better than 3 Houses. You liked XC3 because you can customize any unit into any unit. This game does the same. A mage can have Paladin skill (move 2 squares after attacking) if you learn it from an Emblem. Any unit even Tanks can be Healer with particular Emblem. You can't do this in 3 Houses. Then there is weapon Engraving, which gives you attribute of another Emblem to your weapon. You use Marth Emblem ring, but Sync Skill from Micaiah, and weapon engraved with Celica Emblem. The possibility is endless. You also can pet cats and dogs.
Bottom line is, I kindly ask you to give this game another chance, maybe until Chapter 9, in which you unlock Fishing (which also better than 3 Houses).

I'm not really playing this one for the story. I skim through it and just do the battles, since the gameplay actually gets really good.

Maybe give a shot to FF Path of Radiance and the sequal FF Radiant Dawn they had a pretty decent story imo……. and you would see an actual cat girl xD
Death scene was a little janky, I'll agree.
That said, the social aspects people were saying aren't there do show up around Chapter 6.
Sad to see a no go, but understandable.

For me, the combat got better so far, but the story just didn't got better or worse. It got stuck in that constant generic story which is hard to follow with the generic writing. It's like both predictable and unpredictable at the same time. Someone would say something interesting for a change but it lead to something we all see happening way earlier… What annoyed me the most is the support conversations. These were some of the best parts of Three Houses but in Engage they feel so tasteless and pointless… I would expect to learn something about the characters but so far it's just more "divine dragon noticed me!", and this is painful.
The only thing keeping me playing now is the combat, which compared to Three Houses feels better and actually challenging.
The story does pick up, but way, way too late, sadly.

Please give it more time. Better character join your group no so far in the future. Plus more game machinist/ characters customization come into play
Shame. Got really excited when I saw the first four episodes pop up on my feed. This FE is one of the best gameplay wise since Awakening pulled it from the ashes, and it has some of the best support conversations in the entire series. Bummed you gave up after 2 hours. Seems like people are just buying into a meme of it being the worst told story conceived by humanity and are nitpicking every little nuance that theycan with it. I just hope Engage continues to build on the franchise as opposed to taking 3 steps backwards and going the 3H route where there's next to no strategy in a strategy game.
I can't believe that it's cannon now, that all of the other beloved FF characters didn't die but have to spend an eternity as a ghost. It made think that the devs thought the game couldn't stand on it's own and boy were they right!
