  1. Theatre student here to add a couple of things:
    a) Hamilton is not yet available for anyone to license yet so it is not a matter of them not paying the fee at issue, they weren’t allowed to do it at all (notice in the statement they say that “there are lawful avenues to obtain a license to stage properties” but not to Hamilton itself) so I imagine the settlement payment may be greater than what a licensing fee will be when available
    b) Yes, anyone performing a show publicly needs to license that show from a company (MTI being the most common for musicals) with an agreement for the number of performances AND if they make any changes to the show, these need to be approved by the creator (or their representatives) in advance of the performance (unless it’s public domain of course) – this latter thing I have seen MANY theatres push the boundary of changes to the script and depending on the scale of your production and size of the changes (and temperament of the creator) they will often get away with it but it is a dangerous line to walk (we had a long discussion about this in my Ethics of Theatre Management class)

  2. Just as industry look to automate and replace the worker, I have been waiting to see how successful the entertainment industry will be in replacing actors and singers… Who will be left with jobs to pay money to buy things is my question?

  3. My son is ADHD, and I'm his biggest supporter. My dad and younger brother are ADD and I grew up with ADD behavior being normalized in my household. So, when my son does some of the "ADD things" it's just my normal. I do have to advocate for him with his father though, as his dad takes a lot of his inability to focus on certain things or hyper focusing on others as an affront to him. I have to remind him all the time that there are quick and easy ways to work with our son, that work really well. My boy knows he's smart, and that I think he's absolutely amazing. So, I hope he never doubts his worth just because his brain sometimes does silly things.

  4. QUESTION: Someone, a Mod perhaps? Please ask Emily to look up how big of a deal “Vocaloids” are and their massive sold out concerts of REAL people. The character “Hatsune Miku” is/was a HUGE ONE!

  5. As a pastor I was glad to see the action taken by Hamilton with the church in Texas. Sadly I have noticed over the years that churches often think that copyrights do not apply to them. From wanting to show popular movies in the facilities or as a drive-in to the songs used for services and copying printed materials. Maybe this outcome will lead to more churches respecting artists and authors works.

  6. Replay crew: I've written & deleted a few comments because I can't help but tangent because I am just outraged but not surprised by the Bryant case. I won't let myself comment on the disrespect of the people who took the photos & the morbidity of people who want to see them because that way lies tangents. I will say that I find it unacceptable for the state of California not to have set rules in place for victim images for all first responders to obey after the Nikki Catsouras case &, knowing that case, I can only image what the internet would do to Kobe's family & friends if those death images made it online. I honestly wish the penalties had been higher, but hopefully the celebrity factor will be enough to lead to policy changes in the state and maybe even nationwide to preserve the dignity of the deceased when accidents happen.

  7. My goodness. A drunk teenager drives and ends up in a lake. It happens every day. It's sad. Can the mob move on to one of all the missing people in the world? Nothing odd there.

  8. I was pulled for jury duty right after the birth of my daughter. She was exclusively breastfed so they let me out of it. But I think my Masters of Forensic Psychology would probably get me kicked for basically all criminal cases. And my EMS training and history as a DV survivor… yeah. I’ll never get on a jury, even if I’m called for duty again. Maybe for some very specific civil cases…

  9. As a retired RN of over 30 years find the 1st Responders behaviour abhorrent ! We used to 'lay out' people who had died [prepare the body] before they left the ward. It includes washing them and I used to talk to my deceased patient while working, telling them I would roll them over etc. – it was for their dignity and so that no one within earshot could be offended or hurt by realising that there was a deceased person right there. How they could destroy people's dignity after death like that is anathema to me.
