Closing out 2022: Painting Captain Upham for Bolt Action [How I Paint Things]

Charles Upham was a Kiwi legend , a man who refused to be defined by the medals heโ€™d won and the deeds he was best known for. A man who was bitterly disliked by the British instructors responsible for putting him through officer training, he was a much-loved figure in 20th Battalion well before seeing action for his steadfast dedication to his men, quiet manner, and quick sense of humour.

Uphamโ€™s Wikipedia entry is quite dry, but thoroughly worth a read for the medal citations alone: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charles_Upham

New Zealand cartoonist and author Tom Scott went in search of more about him, wondering if Upham had missed out on more than his share of glory for his actions. Upham never sought recognition or fame for his actions, and deeply disliked having been awarded the VC onceโ€ฆ let alone twice! Nonetheless, this article includes some interesting extra background on the man and the word of those around him: https://www.odt.co.nz/star-news/star-lifestyle/star-entertainment/was-war-hero-charles-upham-short-changed

So, finally, thank you all for your time and interest this year. Wishing you a safe and prosperous new year, and all the best of the season to you and your families!

  2. Thanks for a great year. Merry Christmas and a safe New Year.
I love reading about VC (and other awards, well more so the usual sacrifice and devotion around it). Kind of embarrassingly I find reading the stories of the VCs at the Australian War Memorial almost overwhelmingly emotional experience no matter how many times I have done it (and having lived nearby it has been quite often).
Your refusal to use German Grey brought a smile to my face. Having known many WW2 veterans in my youth, for many at least, that is a fitting nod.

  3. Another great video and what a legend Captain Upham was! Thanks for all your guides. Whenever I consider starting a new project I always check your channel to see if you have a video on it and you've never failed me yet! I get asked quite regularly by new hobbyists for tips on painting and I point them to this channel.
