Clorinde: how Hoyo should be writing characters. Genshin character review!

Gacha games struggle to balance the requirements of the marketing side of things with the needs of the narrative.

Marketing is at its best when the character is iconic and unchanging. It wants to say “this is the defining characteristic of this person”. This is who they are, and what makes them compelling, why you should give them your love — and spend your money to have them in your roster.

Narrative, on the other hand, is at its best when the character is dynamic. They don’t necessarily need major flaws — though of course flaws are a shortcut to this goal. What they do need is some kind of movement. Characters are at their most compelling when their core identity is challenged, since it’s in those moments that their essence is revealed.

As covered in my recent Mavuika review, in my opinion Hoyo sometimes get this balance badly wrong.

Clorinde, on the other hand, is one of the best examples of what I’d have liked to see from Mavuika: a strong, competent, mostly unchanging character, who still feels human, and whose relationship dynamics add depth and soul to an already compelling narrative.

  1. Clorinde-in my opinion, is not how hoyo should write characters. Her story quest feels lackluster. It focused more about the marechausse hunters and not herself. Although to be fair, the story quests in genshin wasnt very good except for a few exceptions.

  2. I personally found Clorinde to be a very bland, one dimensional and even boring sometimes character. I get that not all characters should be clowns or easygoing, but not overly serious and stoic like she was neither, even Neuvillete showed more emotions and dude is a dragon.
It also seemed like she was only on scenes to look cool or do something badass, but then didnt add nothing to the table, no interesting interactions with nobody, like when Wriothesley invited her a cup of tea after saving the day, she didnt even respond and was unfazed, or how her supposed long time friendship with Navia felt so shallow and unexplored. Then when she interacts with MC she sounds and acts like she doesnt even want to be there or is there merely to do her job, no joy, no fun, nothing. Even overly stoic characters like Arlecchino showed diferent emotions like amusement, interest, hate and compassion.
Buf Clorinde looked dead inside most of the time.

But hey, that is how I perceived her character, it is interesting to see the other side of the spectrum of someone who did like her.

  3. Idk Ive never liked or seen anything in Clorinde as a character. Throughout the story she always came off as a nothing character who was always there in scenes but never as the main focus point of the story. I genuinely thought that she was going to be a 4 star until right up until she came out, and when it was revealed that she was a five star I was baffled (I was also baffled about sigewinne being a five star).

  4. Imagine you finally feel like an archon has been well done and next day you wake upto see "how not to write a character" video on her. Further on,then you receive another video with "how to write a character" on your one of the lesser fav ones coz you she came off as bland to you. That's exactly what's happening to me. And it kinda sucks being the overall media enthusiast I am who solely watches or plays or reads stuff for their writing. Ehh.

  5. Nope, she isn't well written at all. Imo it's the opposite, on same tier with Raiden.

The fact that she killed Navia's father and being able to being good friend with Navia again doesn't make any sense. Most absurb writing in genshin imo.

I know it's Fontaine's law, but- it still doesn't make sense at all. Why are you being friend with your father's murderer, and even believes that she's your best friend ever?

Not to mention her personality are really bland, even other stoic characters like Zhongli and Neuvillette have more emotion than her.

The only thing that is cool about Clorinde is her kit. That's all.

  6. Respectfully, disagree

    – champion duelist (never fights anyone)

    – furina's bodyguard (almost zero on-screen interactions)

    – navia's friend (development was off-screened, was also nowhere to be seen during the poisson disaster?)

  7. I love Clorinde, Navia and their relationship (platonic or romantic, doesn't matter). Clorinde is such a nuanced character, and her chemistry with other characters is very natural. The writers did a really good job with showing what she's really like, despite the things we are told. Her character strengthens Fontaine's themes – a nation of theatricals and performance that conceal the truth. No, Fontaine and Clorinde are not perfect, but the themes, story and characters were crafted with care and nuance, and have strong execution for the most part. Without the strong execution, all potentially great ideas and story beats fall flat, which is where I believe Natlan stumbled.

  8. I like both Navia and Clorinde.
They both have wonderful designs, playstyle, cool personality, top level even as a "waifew" character.
But when it comes to the friendship between them it's kinda hit and miss. I think there were many missed opportunities there.

  9. Something I don't see a lot of people mention about Clorinde is that she's effectively immortal. She moves around so fast during her skill duration that she hardly ever gets hit, and then she self heals to cover the rare few hits she does get. This makes her incredibly comfortable to play in all but the hardest end game content.

  10. This is coming from a place of extreme bias, but the best-written character in my opinion, is Arlecchino.

You can see her getting into conflict with other characters, with questions about her methods, morality, or ways of thinking. She's shown to be competent, ruthless, and efficient.

Her relationship with the children of the Hearth is so interesting. And though she may seem like she rules with an iron fist, she'll welcome her own children's opposition and give them chances to prove their conviction and resolve.

I might be fanboying at this point, but I truly felt like who Arlecchino is. as a character, was communicated to the players so beautifully.
