I have a world map in my room that I sometimes stare at while brushing my teeth. I remember seeing this island near Mexico and thinking, "huh, this is part of France?" This video has taught me the history that I wanted to know!

I have an unrelated question that I kinda know the answer to but I don't. Why does Europe look so weird? If you look on a map most continents look kinda similar. They start large before becoming thin and triangular. Kinda like an upsidedown water drop. But Europe doesn't. My friend and I joked that God first drew Europe super detailed and then copy-paste the rest. But why is it that Europe looks so weird? I know it's plates-tectonics and the European flat land but it still feels weird compared to the rest of the world
According to wikipedia, Clipperton isn't part of French Polynesia, but 'an overseas state private property of France, under direct authority of the Minister of the Overseas'.
lmao, imagine being someone who can say they singlehandedly wiped out an invasive species. Probably just goes to show how comically small this island is in the grand scheme of things.
Years ago I spotted Clipperton Island on a map and ended up reading everything was that was available on it at that time. Including the tragic Mexican army occupation. One of my regrets is I never got a chance to visit it in person. I don’t know what the spell is , I suppose it’s just spotting a remote French island off the coast of Mexico.
As someone who loves writing time travel and historical fiction, Arnaud and Alvarez are definitely going on the idea list. That's such an interesting story!

Thank you.
I kinda feel bad that the town there didn’t survive
Ok but no other country or territory has a name that's more fun to say

French Southern lands (Kerguelen, Amsterdam etc) are another interesting one.

Wow, Arnaud and Alvarez really need to be the villains of a movie. Preferably directed by Robert Eggers
Is it murder, if in self defense?
When friends ask me why I like history so much, this video will be my answer.
Reality is far better than fiction
Bravo!
I only knew it from the Bill Wurtz video lol
Staring at a map and going "I wonder what happened there?" is basically the Emperor Tigerstar version of an RPG sidequest
I think we've all wondered about Clipperton at some point.
cool
Video begins at 01:50
Who forgot to mention that at one point French where left there to rot for more than 15 years and finally after that got rescued
DAMN the dude actually single-handedly eliminated an invasive species from the island, we need more people dedicated like this nowadays
Kinda surprised that this island isn't Mexican territory still as it's quite close to the shoreline.
Also kinda confusing that people starved on an island full of eggs/birds, surrounded by reefs filled with fish, a fresh water lagoon, and coconuts
I benefited a lot from your excellent videos, well done
Now do Kerguelen

very pleasant video
Interesting.
Are we positive this wasn't a Dwarf Fortress session?
Ok I haven’t watched it yet but let me hazard a guess that it has something to do with guano
Edit: correct!
The pigs also killed many crabs, allowing more plants to grow; the island might’ve actually solidified if it weren’t for Stager
The past tense of ‘slay’ is ‘slew’.

Historical Rivals idea
America and Soviet Union
France and Britain
Ottomans and Austrians
Russians and Ottomans

Heh heh; "Brown Booby," heh heh
Roca Partida nearby also has a good history behind
Guano is bird poop
