In central Africa a giant slab of carbon-rich peat land, discovered by a team of British and Congolese scientists, is under threat from oil companies and farming.
The carbon must be kept in the ground to avoid accelerating climate change, but some plots have already been sold for oil exploration.
The Republic of Congo is also planning to develop the land for agriculture, unless richer nations deliver more financial assistance.

Unfortunately in D.R. Congo a Chinese logging company Castor which became Union Manyema has already decimated 250'000 Ha of Peatland near Mbandaka, within 3 years the forest was fully logged with no sustainable logging management which against D.R.C law, the concessions were also granted illegally during moratorium and granted by mutual agreement without call for tenders.
Unfortunately next year they will move to start logging another 600'000 Ha of Peatland.
Whose bank account would the ‘financial aid’ from developed countries go into? How much of it would trickle down to the communities trying to literally carve a living out of the land? Is it just a case of making bigger bribes than the oil companies, or will genuine aid be provided?
