Tourists suck. They drive prices up, act like jackasses and intentionally ruin the things they pay so much to go see. Everyone is leaving Venezia because most people can't afford to live there anymore and tourists are such dickheads that it's miserable to do anything at all. €100 per day tourist fine would be perfectly acceptable by most residents. People that can't respect things shouldn't be allowed anywhere near them.

There are different types of tourists and tourism, but tourism is a luxury thing a capitalistic out-growth. If the Brits stayed in Britain the sea site resorts would still be doing fine. I have never been to many of places and I still hold them in my heart. The con list is longer than the pro list, the only thing the pro-list has going for it is economic factors. And this consumerism is bad for everything, from climate to the destruction of places. The history of tourism is deeply knotted together with colonialistic ideologies.
I've never been a party person, but objectively I can understand kids getting drunk and pissing in the street. Not saying it's right or acceptable, but it's dumb stuff kids do. Activity defacing a monument though just blows my mind. What the hell is wrong with those people.
I gotta hand it to the Grand Tour guys; I like the idea of boinking one's way across the globe. They probably had loads of liquor and opium too. They really knew how to party back then.
I am going to disagree. People are just looking for happiness. Tourism, drugs, heavy drinking, extramarital sex, gambling, ectara, all just looking for happiness. Looking in the wrong places. No one, and I mean NO one should tramp all over another's space. You are stomping on graves no matter where you step. This also means researchers. It has BEEN FOUND and does not need a re-search. Look at home, get a dog, LOOK not glance, at your sunset or sunrise. Invite the people next door that you never speak to, over to eat. Find peace at home where you never looked. We have all seen pictures of everything we wish to look at. We do not need yours. You may think I am a snow flak, tree hugger. No I am an old redneck in Texas. I can look at an old barn, dead tree, or even a rock and wonder about the story it might tell. I do not need to dig it up or rip off a peace to Wonder.
The pros and cons of tourism is just six of one and half a dozen of the other…..it gives what it takes, and it takes what it gives, so it's a real catch 22.
Scratching your name into ancient stonework should receive a heavy fine, plus being permanently banned from the country where you committed it. If deterrents are severe enough, then the idiots of this world may actually use what little brain matter they have.
Respect costs nothing, so treat people and places in the same way that you'd expect others to treat you and your home country.
One thing I think will help is with VR. Being able to see these sights without actually traveling. Sure, you won't actually be there, touch anything, meet the people and so on, but you can see them. For instance, the one I have on Steam is Guildford Castle VR. A full walkthrough of the area where I can travel around Guildford Castle, and with the help of VR even see where the old walls used to stand, or even see what it might have been like back in the day where it was used. The kind of thing you don't get from going to the actual place. Best part? It is completely free. Long as you have a VR headset, you can go 'play' this. I think as VR gets better and better, we could do things like this more and more without getting overly costly. You do lose out on the real experience, but it is still something.
