As an atheist, I find ALL religious ideas completely nonsensical and counter productive to moving humanity forward.
A lonely voice in the wilderness
I have been a follower of Christ for almost 60 years, and I also belong to the Democratic party. I disagree that the Christian nationalist have hijacked the GOP. I attended a First Baptist church in a small town close to where I grew up. I started noticing a shift towards the right in the churches, both the pastor and many of the members' personal views as far back as twenty years ago. I attended surrounded churches and also noticed this shift in these churches. Over the years, right-wing politics took the place of the teachings of Jesus Christ more and more. By 2012, our pastor and some church members were already discussing a new civil war. The Christian love that Jesus taught and the Ten Commandments of God were being replaced by hatred, judgment, condemnation, and idolatry. The first two commandments are broken on a regular basis by Christian nationalist. At the cpac convention a few years ago, there was a golden image made of donald trump. With this and all of the flags, hats, tee shirts, bumper stickers, and other objects that bare donald trump's likeness or name they are breaking God's second Commandment because those who purchase them worship donald trump. All of the maga Republicans and donald trump have probably announced that they are Christian nationalist. Christian nationalism didn't hijack the GOP. The GOP became Christ Nationalism and took over almost all of the Evangelical churches and millions of its members who never opened their Bibles and didn't really know what they believed or why. Many were drawn away by pastors, televangelist, church leaders, or politicians who have no place in churches. There must be a separation of church and state. This is a democracy and everyone has the freedom to believe how and what they want. My father, uncle, and father in law all sacrificed dearly in the European Theater in WWll to protect these freedoms.
Please remember, there is more to Christianity than the evangelicals. It seems people think that only evangelicals are Christians and they represent what Christianity is. There are many of us who are NOT that. I would ask you to please remember that these "evangelicals" are not my voice in the Christian faith.
Faith is useless. It is a means of self-deception and is not a reliable pathway to truth. More, by opening yourself up to faith, you are opening yourself up to the false and made-up idols and symbols of religious systems created by man.
The next question i better hear out of these interviews is, "do you vote for Republicans?"
I'll bet dollars to doughnuts that people like this get on TV and wring their hands and clutch their pearls and still push the (R) button on election day.
Republicans are fake christians…. thats it. If they REALLY were Christians…..believed in Christ….then there is NO WAY they would vote republican.

In Buttigieg's book he gave the observation, opinion that Trump chose Pence as his running mate because he needed credibility with the Christian Conservatives, and he felt that Pence would give that to him. Pence saw his political career going nowhere, so he went with Trump.

You know the story of the guy who belonged to a minority group who, when he saw a church about to begin its service, decided to attend. However, he was met at the door by an usher who said, "We don't want your kind in here," and closed the door. Feeling hurt and dejected, the guy got on his knees outside and prayerfully complained, "Lord, they won't let me inside your church." A voice from the heavens boomed down, "That's okay. They won't let me in there either."
"Humility, kindness, and compassion"? Has she read the bible (and not just the convenient Cliffs Notes bits)??? Read Numbers 31 verses 17 and 18 and tell me if you think that's "kindness and compassion". That book makes Mein Kampf look like Dr. Seuss…
Christian Nationalists, is that what they call Q-Anon now days?
A lot of us feel like we are in the same boat as this lady. This nonsense has spilled across national borders and our evangelical conservative element has abandoned their values to go "whoring" after false gods. We left our church of 35 years because they accepted a pastor who had spent enough time in the US to become infected by right wing politics. Within a few months the church was divided over both politics being promoted by some from places of authority and mask mandates in the province. We discovered the pastor's wife had become the local secretary of the most right wing anti-democratic political party in Canada and was proud of it.
We moved on, not wanting to be associated with that kind of hypocrisy; something we would never have thought necessary. We had to leave behind many otherwise good people who has allowed fear to become the dominant factor in their lives. Bullying in with in the church is something that can never be tolerated and the Evangelical Movement has lost most if not all of its relevance in 2023. Hopefully the next generation will rebel against this travesty and return to core values However, too many youth are just leaving the church in total disgust.

The problem with the "but abortion!" argument that many Christians who support *45 use, is the idea that God somehow just couldn't find a candidate that was pro life AND cared about poor people, people of all races, women, sick people, etc. Even if someone is pro life, they shouldn't have to support *45 specifically as being "god's anointed" (!)

All of these things are the problems with many churches and why so many young people are disillusioned and dismiss Christianity – that is to say, the Churches quite often are not what they claim to be and have very little to do with the life and teachings of Jesus.

My parents used to volunteer at a religious homeless shelter.
One Saturday Night, the onsite chaplin started preaching about good grooming, and how the men at the shelter should shave and cut their hair short in order to be respectable in the eyes of God.
One of the out-of-luck gentlemen pointed over to the picture of Jesus on hanging on the wall and said "What about him?"
The next week when my parents went to volunteer, the picture of Jesus had been removed from the wall.
She is saying what I have been seeing for years. It didn't start with Trump but he certainly accelerated it even while living not a single Christian value.
I'm a week late, but glad I caught this video! Susan Stubson and her thoughtful NYT article give me hope that there are still some of those old-fashioned (1970s) evangelicals left, who wanted to do what Jesus said, and just love and help everybody. I'm so sorry the puritans and dominionists took over, with their plan to rule the world that they started pushing in the 80s. But time is still turning, and I think their rule will be over soon.

I'm happy to see there are indeed some vocal Republicans who are wiling to speak up on this issue. It seems very apparent that we are living in the very end times. So while it's incredibly tribulating and scary to see, we know our salvation is at the very door. I'm willing to bet that all that's left to happen before Jesus returns is to expose "the man of unlawfulness/sin" and my understanding from studying the original Koine Greek is this may be more than one person.
